The cushioning preform comprises two layers of foam material, e.g. polyethylene foam, laminated together in a laterally offset relation to one another, with or without a polyethylene film therebetween. Each of the foam layers is of rectangular cross-section has a surface section of greater density than the remaining section thereof. Rolls of the preform may be unrolled into a flattened condition on a substrate, such as a concrete floor, with a stepped edge of each unrolled preform overlaid by an adjacent unrolled preform and adhered thereto by a glue on the stepped edge.

Cushioning preform for flooring

A preassembled drainage line element is fabricated with one or more flaps. In one embodiment, the drainage line unit is made from a webs of net material and a web of water permeable material and has two flaps at diametric points. The webs are formed about a barrel and the longitudinal edges are secured together, as by sewing a seam, to form a flap. The seam can be sewn at one of a plurality of spacings from the barrel to form a drainage line element of a different diameter from a standard diameter without need to adjust or replace other components of the fabricating machine.

Drainage element and apparatus and method for making same

The drainage element is made with a periphery formed of a filter material that allows the passage of water and prevents the passage of soil and a second peripheral section of net material that allows the passage of water while the preventing the passage of the lightweight aggregate therein. The filter material is preferably made of spun bonded polyester and may be made of a biodegradable material such as starch.

A strip of membrane material is laminated to a wider strip of netting and then the longitudinal edges of the strip of netting are seamed together into a sleeve for receiving aggregate to form an elongated tubular drainage element. The laminated peripheral portion of the resultant sleeve is used as the top of the drainage element to preclude fine material from entering the drainage element. Where a membrane is used to form the sleeve, holes or slits are placed in the peripheral portion of the sleeve that is to form the bottom of the drainage element. The seaming of the overlapped longitudinal edges of the membrane is effected using glue and a nozzle that blows air under pressure onto the seam to force the edges and glue to bond together.

The machine employs a forming collar to shape a continuous web of material longitudinally about a barrel with the longitudinal edges splayed outwardly and over each other. A sewing machine spaced radially from the barrel secures the longitudinal edges together to form a sleeve having an outwardly directed flap. In another embodiment, the machine employs two forming collars to shape a pair of webs about the barrel with outwardly splayed edges on two sides and two sewing machines to secure the edges together to form a pair of flaps. The seam(s) can be sewn at one of a plurality of spacings from the barrel to form a drainage line element of a different diameter from a standard diameter without need to adjust or replace other components of the fabricating machine.

Apparatus for making drainage element with a periphery of different materials

A paper product may be made as a crumpled paper strip provided with a layer of coadhesive on one side to adhere opposed portions of the strip together in a strong manner to form a dunnage material. The paper product may also be made as a packaging wrap of two-ply construction with the corrugations of a corrugated ply adhered to a flat ply via a coadhesive on both plies. The paper product may also be made as small discrete elements. The apparatus for making the packaging wrap employs a pair of rolls with interengaging projections to form corrugations in a sheet of material coated with a coadhesive and guides for adhering the corrugated sheet to a flat sheet of material.

A preassembled drainage line element is fabricated at least in part of a biodegradable material, such as kraft paper or a plastic film. The biodegradable material may be perforated to impart a characteristic of water permeability to the material.

Drainage element

The tubular element is made with a sleeve formed of a spun bonded polyester material that allows the passage of water and prevents the passage of soil when used for a drainage element. The tubular element is made with small diameters that allows the element to be coiled about a three-dimensional object when used as a cushioning device.

The drainage element is formed of a tubular mesh that is filled with loose fill elements of polymeric material, deformed into an ovate cross-sectional shape and cured at an ambient temperature to hold the elements in a compacted state to define a rigid drainage element. The drainage element may be fabricated with a perforated pipe to be joined to other like drainage elements in a drainage system.

An article of manufacture is made by filling a container with expanded thermoplastic elements that are in a non-cured state and that possess a degree of latent foaming ability. After filling the container with the non-cured elements, the elements are allowed to cure under ambient conditions during which the blowing agent remaining in the elements in a vapor state condenses allowing air to be drawn in while the elements expand. This expansion of the elements distends and rigidifies the container where the container is allowed to expand or places an item packaged within a container of rigid construction under a tight fit.

Article employing expanded thermoplastic elements and methods for making same

Drainage elements are made by delivering loose fill elements under gravity from a container into a sleeve of netting that is tied at one end to a pipe, or other endless element, that is passing through the container. The sleeve of netting is supplied from an apertured cage extending below the container. In one embodiment a blower and chute arrangement is used to blow air downwardly into the drainage element being formed to increase the rate of flow of the loose fill elements into the sleeve of netting.

Method for making a drainage element

The preassembled drainage element is made with a water permeable membrane sleeve that has slits placed in the peripheral portion of the sleeve that is to form the bottom of the drainage element. The aggregate is post-expandable after fabrication of the drainage element so as to widen the slits and cause the periphery of the drainage element to bulge in the sections containing the slits.

The package is made of cardboard with one or more plastic envelopes laminated to at least the side walls of the package. The envelopes are inflated from without the carton via a hollow needle that passes through a side wall of the package and a glue spot adhering the envelope in place. Air, nitrogen, foamable material or polystyrene beads may pass through the hollow needle to inflate the envelope(s).
