Methods and systems for cementing in a wellbore. An example method includes introducing a conduit into a wellbore. The conduit comprises a reactive metal element disposed on an exterior of the conduit. The reactive metal element comprises a reactive metal having a first volume. The method further includes circulating a cement over the exterior of the conduit and the reactive metal element, contacting the reactive metal element with a fluid that reacts with the reactive metal to produce a reaction product having a second volume greater than the first volume, and contacting a surface of the cement adjacent to the reactive metal element with the reaction product.

Fluid flow control systems are configured to resist erosion-corrosion and minimize wall shear stress during injection or production. A fluid flow control system includes a base pipe with an internal passageway. A housing is positioned around the base pipe to define a fluid flow path between the filter component and the internal passageway. A flow control component is positioned within the fluid flow path in order to control fluid flow. A flow-induced erosion resistance component, which may take a variety of forms, is positioned within the fluid flow path to reduce and/or eliminate wall shear stress along the base pipe. As a result, erosion-corrosion of the bases pipe is reduced and/or eliminated altogether.

Flow-induced erosion-corrosion resistance in downhole fluid flow control systems

A system includes a downhole tool assembly extendable within a wellbore. A running tool axially interposes the downhole tool assembly and the conveyance and includes an elongate body providing an interior and one or more radial protrusions. A connection sub is disposed about the body and provides a releasable connection engageable with the downhole tool assembly. A torque sleeve is disposed about the body and at least a portion of the connection sub. A connection sub piston interposes the body and the connection sub and is axially movable between a supported position, where the connection sub piston radially supports the connection sub, and an unsupported position, where at least a portion of the connection sub is radially unsupported by the connection sub piston. Increasing pressure within an annulus between the running tool and the wellbore moves the connection sub piston from the supported position to the unsupported position.

The invention addresses protecting the free ends of communication lines from debris during downhole wet-mate connection in a wellbore, with protection of the lines upon disconnection as well. A reciprocating debris exclusion device is provided for use with upper and lower tools to be connected. The lower tool has a reciprocating cover member mounted for sliding engagement with the housing of the lower tool, the cover member shielding the free end of a communication line. An upper tool has a bladder-type cover member attached to the upper tool and protecting the free end of a communication line. The reciprocating cover member is moveable between a closed and an open position and is moved in response to contact with the upper tool. The bladder cover is movable between closed and open positions and is moved to the open position by contact with the reciprocating cover member of the lower tool.

Protection assembly for downhole wet connectors

A well packer includes an expandable member carried on a mandrel, the mandrel including a groove formed on at least a portion of an outer radial surface of the mandrel; a back-up assembly carried on the mandrel adjacent the expandable member; and a fold back assembly carried on the mandrel adjacent the back-up assembly, the fold back assembly including a snap ring carried on the mandrel and adapted to move into the groove and adjust the expandable member into an expanded position in substantially sealing contact with a tubular.

Assisting retrieval of a downhole tool

A well tool includes: a well packer; a hydraulic sub-assembly coupled to the well packer; an anti-preset assembly coupled to the hydraulic sub-assembly; a slip assembly coupled to the anti-preset assembly; and a fold-back assembly coupled between the well packer and the hydraulic sub-assembly. The well packer includes an expandable member that rides on a mandrel extending at least a portion of the well tool. The fold-back assembly includes a bias member carried on the mandrel and adapted to engage a profile formed on the mandrel based on a setting stroke that adjusts the expandable member into an expanded position in substantially sealing contact with a tubular.

The invention addresses ways to protect the free ends of communication lines from debris during downhole connection. A lower assembly, positioned downhole, has a lower connector with a free end of a communication line. An upper assembly is moved downhole and has an upper connector. A reciprocating member with attached protective cover is mounted for movement on the lower assembly. A second reciprocating member with attached protective cover is mounted for reciprocating movement on the upper assembly. The free ends are connected as the upper and lower assemblies are moved toward one another. Upon disconnection, the upper and lower connectors are moved apart and the reciprocating members return to their initial positions, again protecting the free ends of the communication lines. The covers are preferably biased towards a closed position and return to a closed state upon disconnection.

Reciprocating debris exclusion device for downhole connectors

Apparatuses and methods for controlling the connection speed of downhole connectors in a subterranean well are disclosed. An apparatus includes a first assembly having a first downhole connector and a first communication medium that is positionable in the well. A second assembly includes a second downhole connector and a second communication medium and has an outer portion and an inner portion that are selectively axially shiftable relative to one another. A lock assembly including at least one lug initially couples the outer and inner portions of the second assembly together such that, upon engagement of the first assembly with the second assembly downhole, the lug is radially shifted releasing the lock assembly to allow axial shifting of the outer portion of the second assembly relative to the inner portion of the second assembly, thereby operatively connecting the first and second downhole connectors to enable communication between the communication media.

In a described embodiment, a system for making fiber optic connections in a subterranean well includes a first fiber optic connector positioned in the well and a second fiber optic connector operatively connected to the first fiber optic connector after the first fiber optic connector is positioned in the well. A method of monitoring a subterranean well includes the steps of: positioning a fiber optic line in the well, the fiber optic line extending in a formation intersected by the well; positioning another fiber optic line in the well, the fiber optic line extending to a remote location; operatively connecting the fiber optic lines while the fiber optic lines are in the well; and monitoring a well parameter using a sensor operatively coupled to the fiber optic line extending in the formation.

Downhole fiber optic wet connect and gravel pack completion

A gravel packing apparatus () has an outer tubular () having a plurality of openings () therethrough and a sand control screen assembly () disposed within the outer tubular (). The sand control screen assembly () prevents the flow of particulate material of a predetermined size therethrough but allows the flow of production fluids therethrough. Apparatus and method for hydraulically actuating a downhole device from a remote location

A packer for use in subterranean wellbores provides efficient utilization of its cross-sectional area with mechanisms therein for anchoring, sealing, and torquing through the packer. In a preferred embodiment, a retrievable packer has a tubular mandrel, rubbers disposed on the mandrel, upper and lower compression members axially straddling the rubbers, a barrel-type casing slip, upper and lower wedges axially straddling the casing slip, a release mechanism, and a series of threaded load-distributing components which help to prevent collapse of the mandrel.
