Phased array antenna system operated from a remote location. Operations at a radio hub location involve generating an RF signal and modulating with the RF signal a continuous wave optical carrier to produce a transmit modulated optical carrier (TMOC). Electronic control signal digital data is also generated at the radio hub to control an antenna beam pattern of an array antenna. The control signal digital data is used to modulate an optical carrier for generating a control signal modulated optical carrier (CSMOC). Both the TMOC and CSMOC are coupled to an optical fiber for communication to an antenna site remote from the radio hub location. At the antenna site, the CSMOC and TMOC are processed to recover the electronic control signal digital data and a plurality of transmit element level modulated RF (ELMRF) signals which are applied to array antenna elements.

Phased array communication system with remote RF transceiver and antenna beam control

An RF transmit signal is modulated onto an optical carrier to form a transmit modulated optical carrier (TMOC). The TMOC is split into N transmit modulated optical subcarriers (TMOS). Each TMOS is respectively processed in one of N transmit optical channels (TOCs). In each TOC, RF antenna beam steering operations are performed by optical tuning the TMOS to selectively control a phase difference between the optical carrier and the optical sideband. A different selected phase difference can be applied in each TOC. The TMOS from each of the N TOCs is then processed to obtain N RF signals for driving an antenna array. In the receive direction, M received RF signals from M antenna elements are modulated respectively onto M optical subcarriers to form M receive modulated optical subcarriers (RMOS). RF antenna beam steering operations are performed by optical tuning the RMOS.

Integrated photonics device for continuous phase-controlled active beam steering and forming

Extending a communication distance range of an electronic data interface involves establishing a data communicating link between a first and second electronic device in accordance which communicate in accordance with a predetermined electronic interface standard (PEIS). An optical fiber bus extender embedment (FBEE) disposed intermediate of the first and second electronic device includes first and second transport modules, respectively disposed proximate to the first and second electronic devices. These transport modules interface the FBEE directly with both of the first and second electronic device in accordance with the PEIS. Electronic data signals received from the first electronic device are used to modulate a first optical signal so as to form a first modulated optical data signal (MODS). The first MODS is coupled to an optical fiber to communicate the first MODS to the second transport module.

Fiber bus extender embedment

Automatically configuring a pluggable optical transceiver (POT) in a software defined network (SDN) involves a pluggable optical transceiver configuration management application (POT-CMA) executing in a processing device disposed in an application plane of the SDN. The POT-CMA receives first configuration information of a POT which has been inserted into a network device in an SDN data plane. Responsive to receiving the data, the POT-CMA automatically determines at least one modification or addition to the first configuration information to facilitate use of the POT within the SDN in the first port of the first network device. Thereafter, the POT CMA causes at least one write event to occur at the first network device wherein the at least one modification or addition is written to a memory in the POT.

Management of pluggable transceivers in a software defined network

A method () for matching characteristics of two or more transducer systems (). The method involving: receiving input signals from a set of said transducer systems; determining if the input signals contain a pre-defined portion of a common signal which is the same at all of said transducer systems; and balancing the characteristics of the transducer systems when it is determined that the input signals contain the pre-determined portion of the common signal.

Systems and methods for matching gain levels of transducers

Portable communication device () generates a telephony audio stream and at least a second audio stream. Responsive to the occurrence of a telephony session, the second audio stream is re-routed from a loudspeaker () to a handset speaker () in the PCD () having a low capacity audio output capability. Upon termination of the telephony session, the second audio stream is re-routed from the handset speaker () to the loudspeaker (). Subsequent to such re-routing, an audio output drive level of the second audio stream is caused to gradually increase over a period of time in accordance with a predetermined ramp function. A series of warning tones are reproduced to warn the user of the potential for high volume audio.

User protection in a multimode personal communication device

Systems and methods for cancelling a near-field noise signal. The methods generally involve: receiving (), from a first acoustic sensing device (), a first signal () comprising a near-field noise signal (); synthesizing () a replica signal () which replicates the near-field noise signal; and communicating () the replica signal and the first signal to a far-field noise cancellation process (). Prior to communicating the replica signal to the far-field noise cancellation process, at least one characteristic of the replica signal is controlled () so that the far-field noise cancellation process will identify the near-field noise signal as far-field noise. The far-field noise cancellation process cancels () the near-field noise signal and generates () an output signal () in which the near-field noise signal is reduced in amplitude.

A software environment () is established in a portable multimode communication device (PMCD) () in which a plurality of software applications () are executing. Each software application performs a predetermined function using a hardware set. The hardware set includes a plurality of hardware resources () provided on the PMCD. The PMCD will periodically evaluate a usage scenario and, based on this evaluation, allocates to each software application selected ones of the plurality of hardware resources comprising the hardware set. The allocation of hardware resources comprising each hardware set is dynamically varied in response to the evaluating.

Modern electronic devices are becoming smaller while the need to critically locate acoustic sensors or transducers, e.g., microphones, is increasing in order to provide improved intelligibility in adverse environments. The acoustic transducers can be used in arrays with their outputs processed in beam forming and noise cancellation algorithms. The use and creation of features on the surface of a small package to deal with the problem of achieving high performance solutions in a limited space are disclosed herein. For example, embodiments of electronic communication devices () include acoustic transducers () integrated with other features such as a volume control (), an antenna (), an adapter () which can be coupled to an input/output jack () and an accessory connector, or a projection ().

Electronic communication devices with integrated microphones

Systems () and methods () for operating a hybrid communication device (). The methods involve executing at least one boot program. Responsive to the boot program, a first and second code are concurrently executed. The first code is operative for booting at least a real-time operating system on which a radio processor of the hybrid communication device is built. The second code is operative for booting at least a mobile operating system on which a cellular processor of the hybrid communication device is built. The radio processor provides support for wireless radio communication while the mobile operating system is booting.

A system is provided to protect a loudspeaker () by controlling a level of an applied audio signal. A control signal is generated by applying an input audio signal () to the collective operations of a gain control system (). The gain control system () uses the input audio signal () in conjunction with at least one parameter to derive an estimated stress associated with the loudspeaker (). The estimated stress is compared with a protection threshold stress (). If the protection threshold stress is exceeded, a gain applied by a gain component () is selectively adjusted to modify the input audio signal (). The resulting gain-controlled audio signal () is employed to drive the loudspeaker ().

Method to maximize loudspeaker sound pressure level with a high peak to average power ratio audio source

A transmitter includes a monitoring circuit for monitoring phase transitions of in-phase and quadrature components of an input phase modulated signal. A filter is downstream from the monitoring circuit for generating a filtered phase modulated signal within an allocated bandwidth. A transmit gain controller is downstream from the filter for adjusting an amplitude of the filtered phase modulated signal based on a dynamic reference envelope control signal. A control circuit cooperates with the monitoring circuit and the transmit gain controller for generating the dynamic reference envelope control signal so that phase transitions are suppressed in the filtered phase modulated signal and so that the filtered phase modulated signal remains within the allocated bandwidth.
