A method for estimating master cylinder pressure during brake apply of a brake system of a vehicle, wherein the brake system includes a brake pedal. A first master cylinder pressure is estimated from brake pedal position during brake apply. A second master cylinder pressure is estimated from vehicle deceleration during brake apply. The master cylinder pressure is estimated during brake apply to be equal to the first master cylinder pressure when the vehicle deceleration is below a predetermined deceleration value. The master cylinder pressure is estimated during brake apply to be equal to a value which is less than the first master cylinder pressure and greater than or equal to the second master cylinder pressure when the vehicle deceleration is at or above the predetermined deceleration value. At least the estimated master cylinder pressure during brake apply is used to control the vehicle.

Method for estimating master cylinder pressure during brake apply

The invention provides a method for controlling a vehicle with a braking system including a modulator pump. A first fluid line can communicate brake fluid from the master cylinder to a brake caliper. An isolation valve including a pressure bypass can be disposed along the fluid line between the master cylinder and the brake caliper. A second fluid line can extend from a first position along the first fluid line between the master cylinder and the isolation valve to a second position along the first fluid line between the isolation valve and the brake caliper. A modulating pump is disposed along the second fluid line to pump fluid to the brake caliper during a controlled brake event. The modulator pump is engaged to pump fluid to the brake caliper until the pressure in the first fluid line reached slightly below the predetermined pressure to prevent the isolation valve from opening in response to excessive pressure.

Modulator noise reduction via motor control

The present invention provides a method, a computer usable medium including a program, and a system for monitoring inflation in a plurality of vehicle tires. The method and computer usable medium include the steps of determining a direct pressure in at least one primary tire and determining a rolling radius for the primary tire and at least one secondary tire. A pressure difference is determined based on the determined rolling radius for the primary and secondary tires. The determined pressure difference is adjusted based on the determined direct pressure of the primary tire. The determined pressure difference is compared to at least one threshold value. The system includes means for achieving the method steps of the invention.

Hybrid tire inflation monitor

Noise produced during a supplemental brake apply is reduced eliminated by reducing the quantity of additional brake fluid supplied to the pump during the apply. The prime valve is opened only at the initiation of the supplemental apply to supply a predetermined small quantity of brake fluid to the accumulator and pump inlet and is then closed for the remainder of the apply. The quantity of extra fluid supplied can be retained by the accumulator and does not need to by blown off back to the master cylinder. The apply valve of the non-regulated wheel brake is controlled to regulate pressure to the regulated wheel brake through the apply valve thereof, which is left open while the release valve of the regulated wheel brake is left closed. The release valve of the non-regulated wheel is controlled to maintain a lower pressure at the non-regulated wheel, preferably equal to the master cylinder pressure whenever possible, while permitting fluid flow back to the accumulator. The more even flow of this arrangement through the circuit permits operation with the smaller quantity of extra brake fluid. The reduction in blow-off events reduces objectionable noise produced by the blow-off valve when the vehicle operator initiates manual brake apply during a supplemental apply.

Method of controlling a brake valve apparatus

A method for determining the axle load on a rotating tire or the percentage axle load of a first axle of a moving vehicle. The relationship between the axle load on a test tire and the rolling radius of the test tire under a constant pressure is empirically determined, and optionally the relationship between the pressure of the test tire and the rolling radius of the test tire at a constant axle load is empirically determined. A measurement of the rotational speed of the rotating tire is taken, and optionally a measurement of the pressure of the rotating tire is taken using a pressure sensor. The axle load or percentage axle load is determined from the measurement (or optionally from the measurements) and from the relationship (or optionally from the relationships).

Method for determining axle load of a moving vehicle

A vehicle hydraulic braking system responds to detection of an operator intended high braking intensity event to isolate vehicle brakes from the master cylinder and activate a motor driven pump to generate a maximum predetermined supply pressure, calibrated to provide activation of an anti-lock braking system, to the brake apply valves for an initial predetermined time. Thereafter, the supply pressure is reduced via an electrically controllable pressure relief valve responsive to sensed vehicle deceleration so as to decrease the supply pressure provided to the apply valve to a level just sufficient to provide the sensed vehicle deceleration. The high intensity braking event is detected via a rate of change of master cylinder pressure, pedal force or pedal travel.

Vehicle brake boost assist control

A substantially constant brake assist gain is provided in a vehicle braking system having a vacuum booster providing braking assist to a brake fluid master cylinder in response to an operator input braking force, even though the gain of the booster falls off from its maximum value in a non-linear manner in a runout initiating portion of the working vacuum range near zero booster vacuum. A brake fluid pump, such as is used in an ABS/TCS modulator, is used to supplement the booster output as it falls so as to maintain a constant, linear brake system gain into runout. In the runout initiating portion of the working vacuum range, a runout assist gain is derived from stored data expressing booster assist gain as a function of booster vacuum, and a target wheel pressure is calculated from the derived runout boost assist gain and a corresponding change in master cylinder pressure. A target wheel pressure error is calculated from the difference between the derived target wheel pressure and the master cylinder pressure and used to control the brake fluid pressure added by the pump to the master cylinder pressure.
