An improved high viscosity fuel injection pressure reduction system and method is disclosed for use in an internal combustion engine. The system may include a first fuel line and a second fuel line. The first fuel line may be configured to be coupled upstream of a combustion chamber of the engine when the engine is operated with the first fuel and to provide a first pressurized volume when installed. Likewise, the second fuel line may be configured to be coupled upstream of the combustion chamber of the engine when the engine is operated with the second fuel and to provide a second pressurized volume when installed. The first and second volumes of the fuel lines may provide peak injection pressures lower than a desired pressure when the engine is operated with the first and second fuels, respectively.

A speed control system and load regulator provide an output signal which is operated upon and modified by a controller in response to the barometric pressure at which the locomotive is being operated.

Altitude compensation system for naturally aspirated railroad locomotive

A railroad locomotive includes a naturally-aspirated reciprocating internal combustion engine, and a traction generator driven by the engine. A throttle position sensor produces a signal corresponding to the throttle position selected by the locomotive's operator. A load regulator receives a speed signal derived from the throttle position signal and outputs an excitation signal for the traction generator which is modified by a controller in response to air availability so that engine speed and load are controlled independently of the selected throttle position, so as to limit the exhaust smoke output of the engine.

Altitude compensation system for controlling smoke emissions from a naturally aspirated railroad locomotive

A power assembly for an internal combustion engine includes a cylinder with a circular wall defining a first inside diameter. A piston is reciprocably housed within the cylinder. An integral, unitary piston deposit scraper is formed in a portion of the circular wall of the cylinder by upsetting a portion of the metallic wall so as to configure a piston scraper with a second inside diameter which is less than the first inside diameter. The inside diameter of the piston scraper closely matches that of the outside diameter of the top land of the piston. As a result, the piston scraper removes combustion deposits from the piston each time it moves into the top dead center position.
