A method of conducting a surgical procedure including implanting an anchor into a bone, wherein the anchor comprises a receiving portion and a screw, the screw including a screw head contained within the receiving portion and pivotally engageable with a surface of the receiving portion, and wherein the receiving portion and the screw comprising a different material. The method further includes selecting a rod from a group of rod types and coupling the rod with the receiving portion to stabilize a position of a portion of the spine.

Rod and anchor system and method for using

An apparatus for implementing a spinal fixation system with supplemental fixation includes a spinal fixation rod assembly and at least one supplemental fixation device. The spinal fixation rod assembly is adapted to provide primary fixation at a plurality of first fixation points by being secured to a plurality of first vertebral components except not into one of the first vertebral components of the plurality that is in a weakened structural condition and located between other of the first vertebral components of the plurality. The supplemental fixation device is adapted to provide supplemental fixation for the assembly at a second fixation point by being secured to a second vertebral component located adjacent to and offset from the one first vertebral component in the weakened structural condition and also to interconnect with the assembly to provide anchorage and thus additional fixation supplemental to the primary fixation.

Apparatus for implementing a spinal fixation system with supplemental fixation

A rod bender includes an elongated body having a proximal end and a distal end and extending along a longitudinal axis; a first arm having a proximal end attached to the distal end of the body and extending transversely therefrom and having a longitudinal axis offset from the longitudinal axis of the body; and a second arm having a proximal end attached to the distal end of the body and extending transversely therefrom and having a longitudinal axis offset from the longitudinal axis of the body and offset from the longitudinal axis of the first arm, said second arm including a channel positioned toward a distal end of said second arm, said channel having a longitudinal axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the second arm.

Rod benders and methods of use

A spinal rod connector is disclosed that allows end-to-end connection of at least two spinal rods. The connector may allow for angular adjustment in the construct which is associated with the patient's anatomy. Percutaneous length adjustment of the spinal rods may be available with visual assessment of the length of the rods via viewing windows on the connector. A locking mechanism may be used to fix a determined angle of the connector dependent upon the anatomy of the patient. The angle may be adjusted if necessary during a subsequent procedure.

Variable angle rod connectors and the methods of use

Spinal surgical systems, instruments and methods include a surgical instrument with a first member mountable to a first vertebra and a second member mountable to a second vertebra. The first and second members are coupled to one another with a coupling mechanism that allows translation of the first and second members relative to another along a predetermined path. The coupling mechanism also provides a pivot axis about which the first and second members are manipulated relative to one another to deliver forces to the first and second vertebrae.

Surgical instruments for delivering forces to bony structures

An apparatus for use in orthopedic distraction or compression is disclosed. In the illustrated embodiments, two arms are provided that are connected by a rod or bar with a mechanism that enables the arms to be brought toward or away from each other. At the end of each arm, a tip for connecting to a bone implant is provided. The tips are pivotable with respect to the arms, and have an opening with a tab that allows insertion of an implant head having branches defining a channel. Once the tips are appropriately positioned, connected and locked to the bone implants, the mechanism can be operated to move the arms together in compression or apart in distraction.
