Random chopping is an effective technique for data converters. Random chopping can calibrate offset errors, calibrate offset mismatch in interleaved ADCs, and dither even order harmonics. However, the non-idealities of the (analog) chopper circuit can limit its effectiveness. If left uncorrected, these non-idealities cause severe degradation in the noise floor that defeats the purpose of chopping, and the non-idealities may be substantially worse than the non-idealities that chopping is meant to fix. To address the non-idealities of the random chopper, calibration techniques can be applied, using correlators and calibrations that may already be present for the data converter. Therefore, the cost and digital overhead are negligible. Calibrating the chopper circuit can make the chopping more effective, while relaxing the design constraints imposed on the analog circuitry.

Background calibration of random chopping non-idealities in data converters

Background calibration techniques can effectively to correct for memory, kick-back, and order-dependent errors in interleaved switched-capacitor track-and-hold (T/H) circuits and amplifiers. The techniques calibrate for errors in both the track/sample phase and the hold-phase, and account for the effects of interleaving, buffer/amplifier sharing, incomplete resetting, incomplete settling, chopping, and randomization on the offset, gain, memory, and kick-back errors. Moreover, the techniques can account for order-dependent and state-dependent hold-phase non-linearities. By correcting for these errors, the proposed techniques improve the noise performance, linearity, gain/offset matching, frequency response (and bandwidth), and order-dependence errors. The techniques also help increase the speed (sample rate and bandwidth) and linearity of T/H circuits and amplifiers while simplifying the analog circuitry and clocking needed. These techniques comprehensively account for various memory, kick-back, and order-dependent effects in a unified framework.

Calibrating time-interleaved switched-capacitor track-and-hold circuits and amplifiers

An exemplary level shifter includes a clock level shifter configured to generate a level shifted clock signal from an input clock signal; and a switched capacitor logic controller coupled to the clock level shifter. The switched capacitor logic controller is configured to steer the level shifted clock signal based on a data signal and the input clock signal, providing a level shifted version of the data signal.

An analog-to-digital converter system that includes a pipeline including N successively-cascaded signal converters, each converting, according to a first clock signal, a respective portion of an input signal of the pipeline into digital codes, a code aligner for receiving and aligning the digital codes from the signal converters in the pipeline into a digital output of the system, an error extractor coupled to an amplifier input node of a selected one signal converter via a first switch for extracting an error signal, and a load system coupled to the amplifier input node of the selected one signal converter via a second switch.

System and method of analog-to-digital converters

Clock generator embodiments are provided to generate half-rate I and Q clock signals. The generators are configured to insure fan-out limitations, to insure correct phasing at startup, to reduce the number of signal inverters in a critical path, and to reduce the total number of inverter structures to thereby substantially extend generator operational frequency. An exemplary generator embodiment requires only two tri-state inverters and four inverters. These clock generators are particularly suited for variety of electronic systems such as high speed data serializers.

Clock generators for generation of in-phase and quadrature clock signals

Signal converter system embodiments are provided to substantially reduce symmetrical and asymmetrical conversion errors. Signal-processing stages of these embodiments may include a signal sampler in addition to successively-arranged signal converters. In system embodiments, injected analog dither signals are initiated in response to a random digital code. They combine with a system's analog input signal and the combined signal is processed down randomly-selected signal-processing paths of the converter system to thereby realize significant improvements in system linearity. Because these linearity improvements are realized by simultaneous processing of the input signal and the injected dither signal, a combined digital code is realized at the system's output. A first portion of this combined digital code corresponds to the analog input signal and a second portion corresponds to the injected analog dither signal. The final system digital code is realized by subtracting out the second portion with a back-end decoder that responds to the random digital code.

Pipelined converter systems with enhanced linearity

Synthesizer structures and alignment methods are provided that facilitate quadrature demodulation. The structures are realized with phase-locked loops that include half-rate frequency dividers to provide loop output signals with a wide range of output frequencies and with frequency dividers that provide quadrature signals in response to the output signals. The structures include controllers that direct alignment methods which lock a VCO to a reference signal from a reference frequency divider to thereby provide the output signals.
