An orthopaedic prosthetic component is provided. The orthopaedic prosthetic component comprises a porous three-dimensional structure shaped to be implanted in a patient's body. The porous three-dimensional structure comprises a plurality of unit cells. At least one unit cell comprises a first geometric structure having a first geometry and comprising a plurality of first struts, and a second geometric structure having a second geometry and comprising a plurality of second struts connected to a number of the plurality of first struts to form the second geometric structure.

A joint prosthesis system is suitable for cementless fixation. The system includes a metal implant component that has a mounting surface for supporting an insert. The metal implant component includes a solid metal portion and a porous metal portion. The porous metal portion has surfaces with different characteristics, such as roughness, to improve bone fixation, ease removal of the implant component in a revision surgery, reduce soft tissue irritation, improve the strength of a sintered bond between the solid and porous metal portions, or reduce or eliminate the possibility of blood traveling through the porous metal portion into the joint space. A method of making the joint prosthesis is also disclosed. The invention may also be applied to discrete porous metal implant components, such as augment.

Provided are methods for processing a green body that includes compacted metal powder, comprising impacting the green body with a particulate material for a time and under conditions effective to displace a portion of the metal powder from the green body. The present methods can be used to prepare green bodies that have 'roughened' surfaces and that can be used to make orthopedic implants displaying low movement relative to bone when installed in situ, which corresponds to higher stability upon implantation and decreases the time required for biological fixation of the implant. Also provided are implants comprising a metallic matrix, and methods comprising surgically installing an implant prepared from a 'surface roughened' green body in accordance with the present invention.

A flexion gap instrument is configured to mate with a ligament tensioning tool, such as known distraction devices and pivoting knee balancers. The instrument facilitates making A/P resections in the femur for placement of a femoral prosthesis component to maintain an optimum symmetric flexion gap, which will avoid the risk of medial or lateral laxity in flexion, instability of articulating component dislocation. The instrument includes a base that is configured to sit within the ligament tensioning device, and a vertically extending upstanding portion that is configured to mate with a cutting block or other knee arthroplasty instrument that must be positioned relative to the distal end of the femur. The upstanding portion includes a measurement plate that bears a scale indicating a flexion gap distance. The scale can be used to orient and align the cutting block in its proper position relative to the distal end of the femur, and to orient the cutting block parallel with the tibial plateau with the ligaments properly and equally tensed. In certain embodiments, a leaf spring can be incorporated into the upstanding portion to help support the cutting block and provide a mechanism for temporarily positioning the cutting block on the flexion gap instrument without the need for additional or supplemental locks.
