A microcapsule comprising A) a core containing a hydrophobic liquid or wax, B) a polymeric shell comprising a) a polymer formed from a monomer mixture containing: i) 1 to 95% by weight of a hydrophobic mono functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, ii) 5 to 99% by weight of a polyfunctional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and iii) 0 to 60% by weight of other mono functional monomer, and b) a further hydrophobic polymer which is insoluble in the hydrophobic liquid or wax. The invention includes a process for the manufacture of particles and the use of particles in articles, such as fabrics, and coating compositions, especially for textiles.

Microcapsules, their use and processes for their manufacture

The present invention related to (micro-or nano-) capsules that have two different functional groups on the outer shell of the particles that allow deposition onto the textile surfaces (i.e. exhibit substantivity) and subsequent covalent bonding of the particles onto the textile (i.e. are reactive towards the fiber).

Capsules

A microcapsule comprising a core containing a hydrophobic liquid or wax and a polymeric shell formed from: i) 1 to 20% by weight of polymerizable silane compound, ii) 1 to 94% by weight of hydrophobic mono functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, iii) 5 to 98% by weight of polyfunctional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and iv) 0 to 60% by weight of other mono functional monomer(s), wherein components (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) total 100%, and in which the microcapsule also includes a hydrophilic polymer which is covalently bonded to the microcapsule. The invention includes a process for the manufacture of particles and the use of particles in articles, such as fabrics, and coating compositions, especially for textiles.

A microcapsule comprising a core containing a hydrophobic liquid or wax within a polymeric shell, in which solid particles insoluble in the hydrophobic liquid or wax are distributed throughout the core, wherein an oil soluble dispersant polymer is adhered to the surface of the solid insoluble particles. Processes of obtaining the microcapsules and dispersions of microcapsules in a liquid are claimed. The microcapsules can be used in a variety of applications particularly in the field of thermal energy storage. Suitably the microcapsules can be designed to have a particular density and can be used in the transfer fluids where the density of the microcapsules are the same as the carrier fluid.

A particulate composition comprising particles which consist of a shell wall surrounding a hydrophilic core, wherein the shell wall is formed from a polymeric coacervate and wherein the particles comprise a polymeric amphipathic stabiliser. Also claimed is a process of producing a particulate composition comprising particles which consist of a shell wall surrounding a hydrophilic core, comprising the steps of a) forming an aqueous liquid that contains a wall building material that is capable of forming the shell wall by coacervation, b) dispersing the aqueous liquid into a water immiscible liquid, which comprises a stabilising substance to form a dispersion that comprises aqueous droplets dispersed in a continuous phase of water immiscible liquid, c) subjecting the dispersion to coacervation conditions, such that the wall building material coacervates at the surface of the aqueous doplets, characterised in that the stabilising substance comprises a polymeric amphipathic stabiliser. Preferably the particulate composition obtainable by the process contains an active ingredient and is used in a detergent composition. The active ingredient preferably comprises any of detergency building ingredients, a buffering system and/or a sequesterant and/or detergent builder. Citric acid is a particularly preferred active ingredient.

Process for making polymeric particles

Water soluble granules or particles of saldimine-type manganese complexes that are suitable as catalysts in reactions with peroxy compounds are described. The granules are used especially in washing agents. They are distinguished by retarded disssolution of and improved action of the manganese complexes.

Process for the preparation of water-soluble granules or particles of saldimine-type manganese complexes

Polymer particles comprising a hydrophobic organic matrix and located at the exterior free cationic groups and a further polymer which comprises free hydroxy groups. The particles are produced by an aqueous suspension polymerization process wherein the continuous aqueous phase contains a polymerization stabilizer and a dissolved vinyl addition cationic monomer. The polymerization stabilizer can be any suitable polymer that comprises free hydroxy groups. The process results in polymers of average particle size in the range 50 to 150 microns and reduced levels of undesired polymer emulsion or undersized particles. The particles are particularly useful for absorbing water insoluble active ingredients, such as insecticides, insect repellents, fragrances, pheromones for subsequent slow release. The cationic surface character of said polymer particles makes them especially useful for forming stable dispersions or slurries in active concentrates such as perfume bases or detergent concentrates. Furthermore these dispersions or slurries remain stable and substantially free of agglomerates. The particles containing active ingredient readily associate with fabrics such as cotton, wool and viscose where the active ingredient is released in a controlled fashion over several days.

Particles having surface properties and methods of making them

Perfume is absorbed within organic polymer particles which have a further polymer at their exterior. The further polymer incorporates free hydroxyl groups and serves to promote deposition of the particles from a wash or rinse liquor. The further polymer may be part of an encapsulating shell, but more conveniently is used as a stabiliser during polymerisation of the particles. Highly hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol is preferred.
