A marine propulsion system, supported by a strut, which comprises an inner propeller shaft supporting a first propeller adjacent a trailing end thereof, and the inner propeller shaft is connected to the drive shaft for receiving and supplying a first portion of torque to the first propeller as well as transfer thrust, generated by the first propeller, along the inner propeller shaft back to the drive shaft. An outer propeller shaft supports a second propeller adjacent a trailing end thereof, and the outer propeller shaft surrounds the inner propeller shaft. A planetary gear assembly receives a second portion of the torque and supplies the torque to the outer propeller shaft so that the second propeller rotates in an opposite direction to the first propeller. A portion of the planetary gear assembly is accommodated vertically above a flat end face of the strut for reducing hydrodynamic drag of the strut.

A marine propulsion system, supported by a strut, comprising an inner propeller shaft supporting a first propeller adjacent a trailing end thereof, and the inner propeller shaft is connected to the drive shaft for receiving and supplying a first portion of torque to the first propeller as well as transfer thrust, generated by the first propeller, along the inner propeller shaft back to the drive shaft. An outer propeller shaft supports a second propeller adjacent a trailing and thereof, and the outer propeller shaft surrounds the inner propeller shaft. A differential gear set receives a second portion of the torque and supplies the second portion to the outer propeller shaft so that the second propeller rotates in an opposite rotational direction to the first propeller. The thrust, generated by the first and the second propellers, is conveyed along either the inner or the outer propeller shafts, to the drive shaft.

A hull mounted, steerable marine drive system having trim actuation is both steerable through 360 degrees and is trimmable. The marine drive system includes a watertight enclosure assembly for sealing the hull, which is adapted for keeping much of the marine drive system from being exposed to water. The enclosure includes a gasket flange plate, a retention plate and a folded gasket. The gasket flange plate closely follows the contour of the hull and enhances the hydrodynamic and wake performance of the present marine drive system. Further, marine drive system includes a forward-neutral-reverse (FNR) transmission assembly, a drive unit assembly having a trimmable upper unit and a steerable lower unit, a steering actuator assembly, a trim actuator assembly, and, preferably, trim foils for providing enhanced negative and positive trim and for providing enhanced positive and negative lift.

Hull mounted, steerable marine drive with trim actuation

A drive pod of a watercraft such as a boat may be designed to break off the hull of the boat in the event of an underwater collision involving the drive pod. A shaft assembly that transmits power from the engine in the hull to blades or a jet in the drive pod is designed to break at a precise point so that seals in the hull and seals in the drive pod are protected from damage. The shaft assembly may include an axial blind hole with an undercut at a bottom of the blind hole. A pin may be inserted to reinforce the shaft above the undercut.

Breakaway shaft

A breakaway skeg for the lower portion of a marine propulsion unit is disclosed. The skeg is designed such that the attachment features will fail under certain load or impacts, thereby preventing damage to the lower portion of the marine propulsion unit. The breakaway skeg is attached via shear tabs that include a relief that accounts for at least a part of the volume of the base portion of the shear tab. The shear tabs are designed to fail under certain circumstances before other components of the marine propulsion.

A marine pod breakaway connection includes a breakaway connector connecting ends of a vertical shaft in an upper housing section and a vertical shaft in a lower housing section. The breakaway connector is configured to yield or fracture to allow the vertical shafts to separate during a breakaway condition when the lower housing section separates from the upper housing section. The breakaway connection further includes disconnect fittings having upper section in the upper and lower portions in the upper and lower housing sections, respectively, the engage and open when the housing sections are assembled to allow fluid flow, and close when the housing sections are separated to substantially prevent leakage of oil from the housing sections.

A steering system for a marine pod drive is disclosed. The system includes a driving pinion attached to a driving shaft. The system further includes a driven gear mounted to a driven shaft. Moreover, the system includes an intermediate gear mounted to an intermediate shaft and in mesh with the driving pinion. Furthermore, an intermediate pinion is attached to the intermediate shaft. The intermediate pinion is in mesh with the driven gear on the driven shaft. Moreover, the intermediate pinion may be fastened with the intermediate gear by a shear pin such that the intermediate pinion rotates with the intermediate gear. The shear pin may be configured to shear when a torque transmitted through the system exceeds a rated torque value, thereby causing the intermediate gear to rotate freely on the intermediate shaft.
