A method of aftertreatment regeneration includes routing exhaust gases from a diesel engine through an exhaust system and initiating a nitrogen dioxide based aftertreatment regeneration of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) by at least partially de-activating a first DEF injector and an upstream selective catalyst reducer (SCR), increasing levels of Nitric Oxide within exhaust gas from the engine, establishing and maintaining an target exhaust gas temperature at an inlet of the DPF by actively controlling combustion characteristics of the engine, converting, with a diesel oxidation catalyst, (DOC) NO within the exhaust gas entering the DOC to NO2, and converting solid carbon-based particulate matter that has accumulated within the DPF to gaseous carbon dioxide (CO2) and NO by using NO2 as an oxidant.

Low temperature diesel aftertreatment regeneration strategy

A battery outgassing filter system is provided. The system includes a battery cell, an external casing encapsulating the battery cell and including a casing vent, and an outgassing filter disposed upon the casing vent and including a filter element including a first filter element portion operable to contain a first size of particulate matter and a second filter element portion operable to contain a second size of particulate matter relatively smaller than the first size of particulate matter.

A vehicle particulate matter contamination recovery system includes a particulate matter filter receiving exhaust gas from an engine. A particulate matter sensor is positioned downstream of the particulate matter filter, the particulate matter sensor collecting a non-combustible contaminant on a circuit of the particulate matter sensor and generating a current indicating presence of the non-combustible contaminant. A total volume of water collected during multiple cold start operations of the engine is passed onto the sensor acting to at least partially dissolve the non-combustible contaminant. The particulate matter sensor is operated in a remedial action mode of operation having no voltage applied to the circuit of the particulate matter sensor until a quantity of the cold start operations corresponding to the total volume of water is reached.

A method for mitigating against failure of a particulate matter sensor of an automobile vehicle includes: determining if a key-off event is present, identifying an engine is off in a vehicle after-run mode; defining when local environmental conditions are outside of mechanical limits of a particulate matter (PM) sensor; identifying input values to reverse the local environmental conditions of the PM sensor; and controlling operation of a heating element of the PM sensor to achieve the input values to reverse the local environmental conditions during the vehicle after-run mode.

Provided is a method for controlling a vehicle exhaust gas treatment system, wherein the system includes an engine and a selective catalytic reduction device configured to receive exhaust gas from the engine and reductant from an injector. The method comprises determining a need for a reductant injection, determining a need for reductant injector noise abatement, and subsequently conducting one or more reductant injection events during one or more engine combustion events. A vehicle combustion event comprises combustion of fuel within a cylinder of the ICE. Determining a need for reductant injector noise abatement comprises determining if an engine speed is below a threshold, if a speed of the vehicle is below a threshold, if a decibel level of a vehicle audio system is below a threshold, or if a hands-free telephone system is being utilized by a passenger of the vehicle. The engine can be a diesel engine.
