Systems, methods, and processing nodes for performing carrier aggregation in a wireless network include associating a primary usage type of an application running on a wireless device with a characteristic of a first carrier based on at least a first frequency band utilized by the first carrier, associating a secondary usage type of the application with a characteristic of a second carrier based on at least a second frequency band utilized by the second carrier, assigning the first carrier as a primary carrier for the wireless device when operating in a carrier aggregation mode, and assigning the second carrier as a secondary carrier for the wireless device when operating in the carrier aggregation mode.

Selection of primary carrier based on usage type

A base station dynamically controls whether or not to serve a WCD on an in-band carrier defined within occupied bandwidth of a host carrier, with the dynamic controlling being based on whether the base station is operating in a capacity-mode on the host carrier, such as whether the base station has beamforming enabled on the host carrier and/or the base station is serving one or more relay nodes on the host carrier. If the base station is operating in a capacity-mode on the host carrier, then the base station could responsively transition a WCD from being served on the in-band carrier to instead being served on a guard-band carrier defined within a guard-band of the host carrier, or to being served on another carrier that is not an in-band carrier defined in the occupied bandwidth of the host carrier.

A wireless communication network redirects User Equipment (UE) from a source frequency band to a target frequency band. An originating wireless repeater in a wireless repeater chain wirelessly receives wireless source signals including source overhead over the source frequency band and wirelessly receives wireless target signals including target overhead over the target frequency band. The originating wireless repeater wirelessly transmits the wireless source signals including the source overhead over the source frequency band and wirelessly transmits the wireless target signals including the target overhead over the target frequency band. A terminating wireless repeater in the wireless repeater chain wirelessly receives the wireless target signals including the target overhead over the target frequency band and wirelessly transmits the wireless target signals including the target overhead over the target frequency band. The terminating wireless repeater wirelessly transmits modified source overhead over the source frequency band indicating redirection to the target frequency band.

A method of operating a macro base station to manage a frequency list. The frequency list includes frequencies for the macro base station and a plurality of wireless relays that serve User Equipment (UEs). The method includes wireless relays monitoring the frequency list broadcasted by the macro base station to determine if their associated frequencies are included in the frequency list. The method further includes, if a wireless relay determines its associated frequency is not included in the frequency list, then the wireless relay transferring a message to the macro base station to add its associated frequency.

And the base station dynamically varies the guest-carrier bandwidth based at least on variation in quantity of client devices connected with the base station on the host carrier.

The wireless communication transceiver is configured to receive data via a communication network and to receive a data restriction message that instructs the wireless communication device to limit a rate at which the data is provided to a user. The processing system is configured to determine individual amounts of the data associated with a plurality of applications of the wireless communication device, identify an application of the plurality of applications associated with an individual amount of the data that meets a criterion, and limit a delivery rate at which application data associated with the application is provided to the user based on the data restriction message.

When a wireless communication device (WCD) is operating under a particular air interface protocol on a particular frequency channel, the WCD detects a threshold signal under another air interface protocol, and the WCD responsively transitions from operating under the particular air interface protocol on the particular frequency channel to operating under the particular air interface protocol on a different frequency channel. The method may thereby help to reduce likelihood of interference.

The user communication device receives an instruction from the user, and in response, receives and transfers the user audio for delivery to the second caller and not to the first caller. The user communication device receives and plays the first caller audio and the second caller audio.

A wireless control system for managing traffic in a multi-band wireless network is disclosed. The wireless control system configured to receive measurements that indicate channel performance information and round trip delay information for wireless communication devices operating within a first frequency band of the multi-band wireless network, process the channel performance information and the round trip delay information to determine a probability of successful frequency transfer, identify a subset of the wireless communication devices with probabilities of successful transfer that exceed a transfer threshold, and remove from the subset wireless communication devices whose velocity exceeds a movement threshold. The wireless control system also receives loading information for the first frequency band, processes the loading information to determine if the loading information exceeds an offload threshold, and if so then identifies a first wireless communication device from the modified subset of the plurality of wireless communication devices and transfers an instruction to modify an operating frequency of the first wireless communication device from the first frequency band to the second frequency band.

The BS and/or a base station controller (BSC) determine and compare a location of the BS to respective location(s) of one or more other BSs. The BS and/or BSC determine whether the BS location is at least a threshold distance respectively from each of one or more other BSs. If the BS location is at least a threshold distance respectively from each of one or more other BSs, the BS and/or BSC sets at least one parameter to prevent the BS from performing the particular BS function. If the BS location is less than the threshold distance respectively from at least one of the one or more other BSs, the BS and/or BSC sets at least one parameter to allow the BS to perform the particular BS function.

System and method for preventing or allowing occurrence of a base station function

Methods and systems are provided for providing wireless service using multiple protocols on a single radio-frequency (RF) carrier. According to an embodiment, a low-cost Internet base station (LCIB) provides wireless service on an RF carrier using a first wireless-communication protocol and provides wireless service on the RF carrier using a second wireless-communication protocol, where providing wireless service on the RF carrier using the first wireless-communication protocol and providing wireless service on the RF carrier using the second wireless-communication protocol occur at different times. A method and system for managing access probe transmission in a wireless communication system. Upon determining that an external impact event, such as a severe weather event, natural disaster, criminal activity, has occurred, base stations may wirelessly broadcast a control signal that causes certain wireless communication devices served by the base stations to suppress transmission of access probes, while allowing other wireless communication devices served by the base stations to still transmit access probes. In a given coverage area, suppression of access probe transmission by one or more wireless communication devices may thereby free up access channel capacity to facilitate calls or other communications by other wireless communication devices, such as first-responder devices for instance.

Methods and systems are provided for implementing a low-cost-Internet-base-station-(LCIB) user-adaptation algorithm. In an embodiment, an LCIB receives usage attempts from a plurality of mobile stations. The LCIB stores records corresponding to the usage attempts, where each record identifies the corresponding mobile station from which the corresponding usage attempt was received. The LCIB uses the records to classify each mobile station in the plurality of mobile stations as authorized or rather as unauthorized. The LCIB then configures its coverage area so as to exclude the unauthorized mobile stations.

A mobile phone is configured to detect emergency events and control services enabled on the mobile phone in response to the emergency events. The mobile phone may be configured to detect events such as the mobile phone being turned off or a battery being removed. When the mobile phone detects an event, the mobile phone enables one or more emergency services on the mobile phone to collect and transmit data that may be used by emergency personnel. Other services may be disabled on the mobile phone to conserve battery power.
