Methods and systems for manufacturing modified asphalts

A method for modifying asphalt comprises blowing an oxygen-containing gas through a base asphalt at a high gas flow rate while simultaneously agitating the base asphalt at a high shear rate and at an elevated temperature for a period of time that is effective to substantially improve at least two paving properties of the base asphalt. In preferred embodiments, modified asphalts are produced having both substantially improved rutting resistance and substantially improved fatigue resistance as compared to the base asphalt.

A method of preparing an asphalt emulsion composition comprises preparing an aqueous emulsion of a synthetic polymer and asphalt mixture, and blending the aqueous asphalt/polymer emulsion with reclaimed rubber particles wherein the ratio of polymer:rubber particles is between about 1:2 and about 1:20, by weight, respectively, at ambient temperature. The final composition may also contain one or more solids selected from a rheological agent, gilsonite, carbon back, surface active clay and polymer fibers, and mixtures thereof.

Method for preparing asphalt/polymer emulsion-rubber paving composition

A fluid or semifluid additive composition useful for asphalt paving consists essentially of between about 10% and about 50% crumb rubber, about 10% and about 50% petroleum hydrocarbon having at least 55% aromatics, between about 10% and about 50% surface active clay, and water, by weight.

A method of preparing an asphalt emulsion composition comprises mixing an aqueous asphalt emulsion, water, latex rubber, and a solids mix composition comprising reclaimed rubber particles passing through a 40 mesh U.S. series sieve and one or more solid addends selected from the group consisting of a rheological agent, gilsonite, carbon black, surface active clay and polymer fibers, and mixtures thereof and wherein the ratio of latex rubber:rubber particles is between about 1:1 and about 1:10, by weight, respectively, and mixing the components at substantially ambient temperature.
