A peak-buck peak-boost current mode control structure and scheme for a synchronous four-switch and non-synchronous two-switch buck-boost regulators sense input and output voltages to smoothly transition between buck mode, buck-boost mode, and boost mode for high power efficiency and low output ripples. With the inductor current sensing, the control scheme achieves the best performance in continuous conduction and discontinuous condition mode operations.

Peak-buck peak-boost current-mode control for switched step-up step-down regulators

In some boost converter applications, an input voltage normally exceeds a regulated output voltage. The operation of the boost converter in this condition can be referred to as a pass-through operation. Using various techniques, the efficiency of a pass-through operation of a synchronous boost regulator circuit can be greatly improved. For example, a synchronous boost regulator circuit can include an input voltage Vto output voltage Vvoltage comparator that can accurately monitor the output voltage to detect the pass-through operation. In a pass-through operation, the high-side switch can be kept ON to maintain high efficiency, and the quiescent current of the regulator circuit can be minimized by setting portions of the control circuit into a sleep mode.

Synchronous boost regulator circuit with pass-through operation control

In a method for controlling a current regulator for dimming an LED load, a dimming signal has a duty cycle that controls the LED ON-time and LED OFF time at a fixed frequency. The regulator is controlled by the dimming signal to only supply current to the LED load during the LED ON-time. The regulator includes an inductor. The inductor current at the end of an ON-time is detected and its value is stored. During the OFF-time, the inductor is pre-charged to the current level matching the stored value, while the regulator's feedback loop is frozen during the OFF-time to not change its feedback control signal. Upon the next ON-time, the regulator begins supplying current to the LED load with the pre-charged inductor current, so there is no initial decrease in the delivered LED current. Therefore, the current pulse magnitudes are constant even with very low duty cycles.

Pre-charging inductor in switching converter to achieve high PWM dimming ratio in LED drivers

System and method for a light emitting diode (LED) driver are disclosed. To supply an LED bus voltage to a large array of LEDs organized in multiple channels where one or more LEDs are connected in series in each channel, an LED driver includes a power converter, a feedback generation circuit, and a phase-division based controller. The power converter is configured for providing the LED bus voltage to the multiple LED channels based on a voltage control signal. The feedback generation circuit is configured for generating a feedback signal based on the LED bus voltage supplied to the multiple LED channels. The phase-division based controller is configured for generating the voltage control signal based on the feedback signal and information from the multiple LED channels. The phase-division based controller divides each pulse width modulation (PWM) of each channel into a tracking phase and a pre-charging phase so that the LED bus voltage supplied to the multiple channels changes between the tracking phase and the pre-charging phase.

Method and system for high efficiency, fast transient multi-channel LED driver

Circuitry arranged for sensing a variable polarity signal comprises an input node supplied with the variable polarity signal to produce an input signal. A first sensing circuit is responsive to the input signal having a first polarity for producing a first signal. A level shifting circuit is responsive to the input signal having a second polarity for shifting a level of the input signal to produce a shifted signal of the first polarity at a level determined by the input signal.

Feedback circuitry and methodology for switching circuit capable of generating both positive and negative output voltages

A circuit for controlling pulsed current to a load, one application of which is in LED dimmer circuitry, comprises first and second reference nodes for receiving a supply voltage, an input node for receiving a timing signal such as a PWM signal, and a controlled switch coupled between the first and second reference voltage nodes for supplying current to the load. Pull-up circuitry may be coupled between a control electrode of the controlled switch and first reference voltage node, and a pull-down switch coupled between the control electrode and second reference voltage node. A control circuit coupled between the input node and control electrode of the controlled switch is configured to control the controlled switch in response to the timing signal. The circuit may further include a reference voltage source configured for producing a voltage of magnitude independent of supply voltage magnitude. The control circuit is coupled to the reference voltage source and operative to control the controlled switch in response to the timing signal and reference voltage.

Circuit and methodology for supplying pulsed current to a load, such as a light emitting diode

An accurate, low voltage, low parts-count current sense amplifier can be employed to sense either high side or low side currents. A pair of transistors are connected in a common-base configuration and biased with equal currents, with a sense resistor connected between their respective emitter circuits. A sensed current develops a voltage across the sense resistor which unbalances the transistor currents. A third transistor is connected to provide a feedback current to detect and correct the current imbalance; the feedback current is directly proportional to the sensed current, and serves as the current sense amplifier's output. The current sense amplifier requires only three transistors, can be realized with bipolar or FET devices of either polarity, and can operate at supply voltages as low as about 1.1 volts.
