An external speaker/microphone apparatus for a radio transceiver includes a speaker, a microphone, a push-to-talk switch, and an emergency switch. The apparatus further includes an encoder module operatively coupled to the push-to-talk switch and the emergency switch and configured to generate a digital identification each time the push-to-talk switch is pressed, and a digital emergency signal and digital identification when the emergency switch is pressed. The apparatus also includes a connector configured to operatively couple audio to the speaker from the transceiver, a combination audio signal from the microphone and the encoder module to the transceiver. The connector is further configured to operatively couple the push-to-talk switch and the emergency switch to the transceiver so that the transceiver is switched to a transmit mode when either the push-to-talk switch or the emergency switch is pressed.

Method and apparatus to provide digital signaling without internal modification of analog FM transceiver

A radio communications system includes plural radios with each radio having a microprocessor, a modem, and corresponding automatic number identification (ANI) information as well as a predetermined pattern of tones or digital codes corresponding to a particular radio frequency channel stored in memory. For each transmission, the radio microprocessor encodes the corresponding radio identification data that provides the encoded radio identification data to the radio modem in parallel format. The radio modem converts the encoded identification data into a serial data stream at the same time that the microprocessor is generating the predetermined pattern of tones or digital codes. Thereafter, the generated pattern of tones or digital codes is combined with the serial data stream and simultaneously transmitted over the transmission radio frequency channel. The modem also assists the microprocessor in the reception of radio identification data while the microprocessor is detecting received channel guard information. Because the modem has a data transmission frequency which exceeds the transmission frequency of the ANI data, each bit of ANI data is represented using a particular binary pattern (or its complement) to simulate an output at the modem corresponding to an ANI signalling carrier frequency.

Method and apparatus for encoding and decoding automatic radio

A downlink between a communications dispatch console and a digitally trunked radio repeater system site controller efficiently transfers message data between the site controller and the console over a standard 9.2 kilobit per second landline. A downlink trunking card identical in structure to trunking cards used in the preferred embodiment system for RF channel signal processing interfaces the site controller with the landline link. A similar trunking card on the other side of the landline link interfaces the dispatch console processor with the landline link. Message protocol and format is translated between the site controller and the landline link and between the landline link and the dispatch console. Data buffering at each end of the landline link maximizes data transfer rate over the landline, and in addition, a priority scheme insures that more important messages are transmitted over the downlink before less important messages. Retransmit-until-acknowledged protocol is used to insure reliable message transfer--and also to permit receiving units along the downlink to slow down transmitting units in order to avoid message traffic blockage.
