A lithium-air battery is provided, which includes a cathode having a gas diffusion layer containing a solid electronically conductive material coated with carbon black, the gas diffusion layer being at least partially filled with gaseous air, a separator having an electronically nonconducting filter material arranged between the anode and the cathode, the filter material being at least partially impregnated with a liquid electrolyte, and an anode containing a material selected from lithium metal, material alloyable with lithium, metal oxide, and mixtures thereof. Methods for making such battery and the use of such battery in a motor vehicle are also provided.

Low-polarization lithium oxygen battery

A lithium-air battery is provided which includes a gas diffusion layer that is at least partially filled with air, having an electrically conducting material as a cathode, an at least partially electrolyte-impregnated filter having an electronically non-conducting material as a separator, and an anode having a lithium metal, a lithium-metal alloy or lithium-oxide-metal mixture. The separator is between the anode and the cathode and the electrolyte includes a hydrophobic, ionic liquid and a lithium salt. The three phases, gaseous air, liquid electrolyte and solid conducting material, are in contact on at least one point of the gas diffusion layer. A method for producing such battery and the use of such battery in a motor vehicle are also provided.

Lithium-air battery

A rechargeable electrochemical metal ion cell includes negative and positive electrodes, and an electrolyte system between them. The negative electrode includes a metal capable of releasing and accepting metal ions. The positive electrode includes at least one compound capable of releasing and accepting metal ions different from those of the negative electrode. The electrolyte system includes: a glycol-based electrolyte solution containing a salt of a metal included in the negative electrode and a salt of a metal included in the positive electrode; a matrix adapted to retain the electrolyte solution, where two reversible reactions take place simultaneously in the cell: a reversible deposition and dissolution process of ions of a metal included in the negative electrode takes place in the negative electrode and a reversible ion exchange process of a metal included in the positive electrode takes place in the positive electrode. The metals are different from one another.

The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a lithiated metal-carbon composite electrode, a lithiated metal-carbon composite electrode manufactured thereby, and an electrochemical device including the electrode. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a lithiated metal-carbon composite electrode with a new structure having excellent charge/discharge and cycle characteristics, a lithiated metal-carbon composite electrode manufactured thereby, and an electrochemical device including the electrode. In the lithiated metal-carbon composite electrode, lithium is alloyed with a metal and is inserted into a crystal structure of carbon to form the composite having a stable structure. Thus, a volume of the metal is slightly varied, so a cycle characteristic may not be deteriorated and charge/discharge capacities may be improved. The lithiated metal-carbon composite electrode may control an irreversible capacity during initial charging/discharging and may be substituted for an unsafe lithium metal anode.

A pentacyclic anion salt is provided for use thereof in electrolyte compositions. The compound has an inorganic, organic or organometallic cation M of valency m (1&#x2266;m&#x2266;3) and m anions corresponding to the formula (I) in which Ris a &#x2014;CFZ'Z&#x2033; group in which Z&#x2032; is F or a perflouroalkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and Z&#x2033; is an H, F or Cl group, an optionally fluorinated or perfluorinated alkoxy group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, an optionally fluorinated or perfluorinated oxaalkoxy group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms or an optionally fluorinated or perfluorinated alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms; Z&#x2033; being other than F when Z&#x2032; is F. An electrolyte composition comprises said salt in solution in a liquid solvent or a polymer solvent.

Five-membered cyclic anion use thereof as an electrolyte

The invention relates to a pentacyclic anion salt and to the use thereof in electrolyte compositions. The compound comprises an inorganic, organic or organometallic cation M of valency m (1&#x2266;m&#x2266;3) and m anions corresponding to the formula (I) in which Ris a &#x2014;CFZ'Z&#x2033; group in which Z&#x2032; is F or a perfluoroalkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and Z&#x2033; is an H, F or Cl group, an optionally fluorinated or perfluorinated alkoxy group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, an optionally fluorinated or perfluorinated oxaalkoxy group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms or an optionally fluorinated or perfluorinated alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms; Z&#x2033; being other than F when Z&#x2032; is F. An electrolyte composition comprises said salt in solution in a liquid solvent or a polymer solvent.

An electrochromic window comprises a tungsten oxide electrode on a transparent conductive glass sheet and a nickel oxide counterelectrode. The counterelectrode is activated by electrochemical intercalation of lithium on a transparent conductive glass sheet. Utilization of Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3, or more generally M.sub.2 O.sub.3 materials, after suitable electrochemical reaction with lithium, as improved non-metal lithium electrodes for the realization of lithium rechargeable batteries. These materials may be used as negative electrodes in replacement of lithium metal or lithium alloys in batteries using organic electrolytes, with the specific advantages of avoiding passivation and dendritic deposition effects during cycling.
