A portable, single-thread chain stitch bag closing machine has a movable needle guiding device. A looper mounted so as to be slidable in a feed direction of a workpiece and pivotable transversely to the feed direction is protected against damage or breakage by a needle guide which guides a needle in the feed direction of the workpiece when the looper pivots towards the needle. The needle guide thereby ensures that a point of the looper reliably pivots past the needle, without coming into contact with the needle.

An apparatus for adjusting stitch length in a sewing machine by means of a selectively adjustable eccentric possessing a self-locking device. The apparatus includes a support collar fixed on the machine's main shaft with an eccentric support mounted on the support collar which is operatively connected to a connecting rod for actuating the machine's feed dog. The eccentric support includes a central opening within which the adjustable eccentric is operatively disposed and which forms an integral part of a support ring rotatably mounted on the machine's main shaft. A manually operable push button serves to hold the support ring stationary and to release the self-locking device. The machine includes the conventional hand wheel fixed on one end of the machine's main shaft and, while the pushbutton is held in a depressed condition, the self-locking device remains in a released state thus enabling the selective rotation of the machine's main shaft by the hand wheel. This rotation effects a change in position of the adjustable eccentric within the eccentric support and the amount the connecting rod travels to actuate the feed dog. The selective positioning of the adjustable eccentric is maintained by release of the push button that activates the self-locking device.

Stitch adjustment device for sewing machines

A low-inertia presser device for sewing machines having a coil spring operatively connected to a pivotably mounted arm that carries the machine's presser foot. The spring is housed within a sleeve having a bifurcated end that straddles the arm. A thrust rod protruding from the sleeve has one end in engagement with the coil spring and the opposite end with that portion of the pivotably mounted arm extending through the bifurcated end of the sleeve. The biasing force of the coil spring is effective in minimizing the inertia of the moving parts and is effective in causing the presser foot to precisely and consistently track the movement of the feed dog above the needle plate, resulting in controlled movement of a workpiece in a straight line along the sewing axis.

Presser foot control for sewing machines

A needle protector for sewing machines operatively connected to the machine's horizontal shaft for driving its looper in an orbital pathway about the machine's needles. The horizontal shaft is simultaneously driven through oscillating and reciprocating movements. The needle protector is carried on a pivotable support and the reciprocating movement of the horizontal shaft is effective in moving the needle protector toward and away from the needles in timed sequence with the stitch forming cycle.
