A power tool is provided including a motor housing; a transmission housing disposed adjacent the motor housing with a gap therebetween; an electric motor including a rotor and a stator mounted within the motor housing; and an intermediate housing disposed between the electric motor and the transmission mechanism. The intermediate housing includes a back wall extending radially adjacent an axial end of the stator and having a through-hole therein through which the motor spindle extends; side walls extending axially from an outer circumference of the back wall internally of the motor housing; and one or more external walls extending substantially-radially outwardly from axial end of the one or more side walls to fill a gap formed between the transmission housing and the motor housing in the axial direction.

Power tool having an intermediate housing

A range of power tools each includes motor and transmission housings with an electric motor and a transmission mechanism mounted respectively therein, with the transmission mechanism using the rotary output of the motor to drive a cutting tool. An intermediate housing is sandwiched between the motor and transmission housings. Each of the motor housings is the same in shape, and the length of the electric motors in each of the power tool is different to the length of the electric motors in the other power tools in the range. The transmission housing is positioned differently relative to the motor housing in each power tool to accommodate the difference in length in the electric motor in that power tool, the shape of the intermediate housing in each power tool varying relative to the other intermediate housings to accommodate the difference positions of the transmission housings relative to the motor housings.

Range of power tools

A mounting assembly for moveably mounting a handle of a power tool to a housing of the power tool is disclosed. The mounting assembly has a metal bar () mounted to a housing () of the power tool and a vibration damper () mounted to a handle () of the power tool and slidably mounted to the metal bar. The vibration damper includes a vibration damping member () for damping vibrations tending to cause the vibration damper to pivot relative to the metal bar about an axis substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the metal bar.

Mounting assembly for handle for power tool

A speed adjustment mechanism for a power tool is disclosed. The mechanism includes a support, a first toothed gear for rotation by means of an adjustment dial, and a second toothed gear rotatable by means of the first toothed gear and connected to a potentiometer which is connected to a speed control circuit. Limited movement of the first and second toothed gears relative to each other is possible to reduce transmission of impacts from the adjustment dial to the speed control circuit.

Control mechanism for a power tool

A rotary hammer is provided which comprises a tool holder (,) and an air cushion hammering mechanism which comprises a cylinder (,&prime;) having one end (,) that is connected to the tool holder, a piston (,), a ram (,) and a beat piece (,) slidably located in the cylinder so that reciprocation of the piston in the cylinder will cause the ram to reciprocate in the cylinder and thus cause the beat piece to hit a bit located in the tool holder. The ram (,) has an annular recess (,) in its peripheral surface at the end thereof nearest the piston (,), in which recess is located an annular seal (,). The annular seal has an annular seating flap (,) lying on the radially outwardly directed surface of the recess and an annular sealing flap (,) that is joined to the seating flap and extends between the radially outwardly directed surface of the recess and the inner wall of the cylinder (,&prime;).

Rotary hammer

A rotary hammer which comprises a tool holder (,), an air cushion hammering mechanism which comprises a piston (,) and a beat piece (,) slideably located in a cylinder (,&prime;) so that reciprocation of the piston in the cylinder will cause the beat piece to hit a tool located in the tool holder; and means for causing the cylinder to rotate in addition to, or instead of, reciprocation of the piston in order to cause a tool located in the tool holder to rotate. The piston (,) is formed from a plastics material and is sealed in the cylinder (,&prime;) by an annular seal (,) that is located within an annular groove (,) in the piston. The annular seal has an inner diameter that is greater than the diameter of the radially outwardly directed surface of the groove, and the groove has an axial dimension that is greater than that of the annular seal, so that when the cylinder rotates about the piston (without reciprocation of the piston) the seal (,) will rotate with the cylinder (,&prime;).
