A swaging machine comprises eccentric-driven swaging rams provided with a slide track extending transversely to the axis of the eccentric, and a slide block rotatably mounted on the eccentric and guided by said slide track as in a Scotch yoke. To provide a structure which is simple, inexpensive and light in weight, each swaging ram is coupled to the associated slide block at that end face of the swaging ram which is remote from the die. The slide track is formed by a head portion of the swaging ram and interengages with an associated guide rail of the slide block.

A swaging machine comprises at least four radial rams, which are angularly apart and axially guided in the machine frame and held against rotation. Each ram is associated with a power screw, to which an oscillating angular motion can be imparted preferably by a rocker lever and an eccentric shaft. Screw-threaded drive trains actuate said power screws so as to impart the reciprocating swaging motion to the rams and to adjust their position. To provide a structure which is as simple, compact and inexpensive as possible, each power screw has two screw-threaded portions. One screw-threaded portion is operatively connected to a swaging drive train and in threaded engagement with mating screw threads of the associated ram. The other screw-threaded portion is in screw-threaded engagement with a rotatable adjusting nut of an adjusting drive train.

Each of two tools is used in a sequence of operations to machine respective cylindrical portions of a multiple-crank crankshaft and the crankweb side faces adjoining said cylindrical portion. To permit an optimum utilization of the two tools and to ensure a substantial shortening of the time required for the machining of a crankshaft, the infeeding direction and the orbital feed rate of each tool are controlled independently of the other tool and only in dependence on the requirements for the respective operation. The crankshaft is held in a fixed position until its machining has been completed. In a milling machine for carrying out the process, each tool consists of an internal milling cutter and means are provided for moving said cutters independently of each other along three coordinate axes.

In a process of milling a multiple-throw crankshaft comprising mainshaft portions and crankpins in alternation, two outer crankpins of three axially consecutive crankpins are milled at the same time while the crankshaft is supported at its ends and at the mainshaft portions which connect said three crankpins.

A disc-shaped cutter body (1; 101; 201) is provided with a multiplicity of tooth plates (4; 104; 204, 204a), which engage suitable backing and end-supporting surfaces (5, 6, 7; 105, 106, 107, 205, 205a, 206, 206a, 207, 207a) of tooth holders (3; 103; 203) inserted in recesses formed by radial grooves (2; 102; 202) in the cutter body. Each tooth plate is clamped between a tooth holder and a head portion (9; 109; 209a, 209b) of an elongated holding-back member (8; 108; 208), which has a foot portion (10; 110; 210) that is disposed in the recess of the cutter body and bears on said tooth holder. To enable the tooth plates to be reliably fixed in a narrow cutter body by means which involve only a small expenditure and with a controlled clamping force and to facilitate the handling of the tooth plates and the means for fixing them, each tooth plate (4; 104; 204, 204a) is held in position by the head portion (9; 109; 209; 209a ) of a resilient holding-back member (8; 108; 208), which between its head and foot portions bears on a surface (12; 112; 212) of the recess in the cutter body.

First and second gripping heads consisting of a manipulator and a holder-up, respectively, are disposed on opposite sides of a swaging box. First and second sleeves are rotatably mounted in said first and second gripping heads, respectively and aligned on a horizontal axis which extends through said swaging box. A mandrel is non-rotatably and axially immovably mounted in said first sleeve and adapted to carry a tubular workpiece surrounding said mandrel. First and second abutments are carried by said first and second gripping sleeves, respectively, and have first and second annular gripping surfaces, respectively. Axial drive means serve to move said first gripping head along said horizontal axis toward said swaging box and to simultaneously move said second gripping head in the same direction. Control means serve to sense the magnitude of said gripping force exerted by said abutments with said first and second annular gripping surfaces and to detect any deviation of said magnitude from a set value and for controlling the movement of said second gripping head relative to said first gripping head along said horizontal axis in dependence on such deviation as said first and second gripping heads are simultaneously moved along said horizontal axis in said direction.
