A Field Emitter Device (FED) having a substantially reducing atmosphere is described. The atmosphere in a FED can be maintained substantially free of oxidizing gases and includes a partial pressure of hydrogen between about 1.times.10.sup.-7 millibar (mbar) and 1.times.10.sup.-3 mbar. In one embodiment, a non-evaporable getter material previously charged with hydrogen gas is placed inside the FED before the FED is sealed. The non-evaporable getter material can be charged by exposure to hydrogen gas at a pressure between about 1.times.10.sup.-4 and about 2 bar. Subsequently, the components forming the FED are sealed, and the FED is evacuated and hermetically sealed to the outside atmosphere.

A window for a domestic oven having a reduced thermal transmission so that the external glass surface, which can be touched, is maintained at an acceptable temperature. Between the walls of the window there is an evacuated space. Preferably at least the internal surface of the outer wall is coated with a transparent layer of reflecting material. Domestic oven window having a low temperature external surface

A window for a domestic oven is described which has a reduced thermal transmission so that the outer glass surface, which can be toughed, is maintained at an acceptable temperature. Between the surface of an outer glass sheet and an inner glass sheet of the window there is a rare gas filled enclosed volume. Preferably at least the inner facing surface of the outer glass sheet is coated with a transparent layer of reflecting material. A non-evaporable getter material is contained within said enclosed volume.

Domestic oven observation window having a low temperature external

A getter device comprises a getter metal vapor releasing material and a source of an alkali metal which releases an alkali metal during or after the latter period of getter metal evaporation. Such getter devices are found to produce less methane after evaporation of the getter metal without producing higher hydrocarbons. A higher pressure of hydrogen is formed which aids cathode functioning.
