A reference jig comprises a base adapted to be secured to a distal end of a bone. An adjustment mechanism has a bracket, one or more rotational joints operatively mounting the bracket to the base, whereby the bracket is rotatable in two or more rotational degrees of freedom relative to the base, and one or more translational joints. A landmark alignment unit is operatively connectable to the bracket by the at least one translational joint, the landmark alignment unit having a bone alignment component configured to be aligned with at least one bone landmark.

Computer-assisted surgery system and method for orienting a knee implant

A computer-assisted surgery system for obtaining a distance between at least two fixed points relative to a bone comprises a first accelerometer unit located at a first fixed location on the bone, and producing first acceleration data during a movement of the bone. A second accelerometer unit is located at a second fixed location on the bone, and simultaneously producing second acceleration data during the movement. A gyroscope unit is fixed to the bone and simultaneously producing angular rates of change of said movement. A processor unit obtains the acceleration data and the angular rates of change for calculating the distance between the first fixed position and the second fixed position on the bone using a distance value of a distance vector between the accelerometer units. An interface outputs the distance between the first fixed position and the second fixed position relative to the bone. A method for calculating a distance between at least two points on a bone is provided.

Computer-assisted surgery system and method for calculating a distance with inertial sensors

A tibia cutting assembly includes a tibia cut guide with at least one cut slot. A guide rod has a guide holder mountable to the cut guide at a first end of the guide rod, and a second end of the guide rod is mountable non-invasively about a skin of a patient. The guide rod is extendable in length to displace the tibia cut guide and adjust a position thereof with respect to a tibia of the patient. The guide holder cooperates with the tibia cut guide to adjust an orientation of the tibia cut guide. A first inertial sensor is mountable to the guide holder and is displaceable therewith, and a second inertial sensor is mountable to the guide rod at the second end thereof.

A system and method are provided that use context awareness with device-dependent training to improve precision while reducing classification latency and the need for additional computing, such as by relying on cloud-based processing. Moreover, the following can leverage signal analysis with multiple sensors and secondary validation in a multi-modal approach to track passive events that would otherwise be difficult to identify using classical methods. In at least one implementation, the system and method described herein can leverage low power sensors and integrate already available human behavior in modular algorithms isolating specific context to reduce user interact time and training to a minimum.

A computer-assisted surgery (CAS) system comprises a cup implanting device including a shaft having a tooling end and a handle end with a handle for being manipulated, the shaft having a longitudinal axis, the tooling end adapted to support a cup for being received in an acetabulum of a patient, and a rotation indicator having a visual guide representative of a device plane, wherein the device plane is in a known position and orientation relative to a center of the cup on the tooling end. A CAS processing unit includes at least one inertial sensor unit connected to the cup implanting device, the inertial sensor unit outputting three-axes readings and having a virtual preset orientation related to a reference axis of a pelvis of the patient, the virtual preset orientation being based on pre-operative imaging specific to the pelvis of the patient, the reference axis of the pelvis passing through a center of rotation of said acetabulum of the pelvis and through a reference landmark of the pelvis, wherein an instant three-axis orientation of the longitudinal axis of the cup implanting device is trigonometrically known relatively to the reference axis when the cup is in the acetabulum of the patient and the device plane passes through the reference landmark via the visual guide, the instant three-axis orientation used for calibrating the inertial sensor unit on the cup implanting device relative to the pelvis.

Method and device for cup implanting using inertial sensors

A system for tracking a femoral frame of reference in computer-assisted surgery comprises a sensor unit. The sensor unit is adapted to be secured to the femur. The sensor unit comprises accelerometer and gyroscope sensors that produce orientation data. A processing unit receives gyroscope and accelerometer data. The processing unit comprises a gyroscope-data calculator to provide calculated acceleration data resulting from movements of the femur, an accelerometer-data calculator to calculate measured acceleration data resulting from movements of the femur, and an acceleration comparator to relate an orientation of the sensor unit to the femur to define a femoral frame of reference. The femoral frame of reference is defined from the comparison between the calculated and the measured acceleration data. A sensor orientation interface provides orientation data for the femur from a tracking of the femoral frame of reference. A method for tracking a femoral frame of reference is also provided.

A method for assisting in positioning the acetabular cup comprises orienting a cup positioning instrument with a cup thereon in an initial reference orientation relative to an acetabulum of a pelvis with the cup forming a joint with the acetabulum, the cup positioning instrument comprising an inertial sensor unit with pre-planned orientation data for a desired cup orientation based on at least one landmark of the pelvis, The cup positioning instrument is rotated to a desired abduction angle as guided by an interface of the cup positioning instrument, based on movements relative to at least one landmark. The cup positioning instrument is rotated to a desired anteversion angle as guided by the interface of the cup positioning instrument, based on movements relative to the at least one landmark. Upon reaching the desired cup orientation as indicated by the interface, the cup is impacted into the acetabulum.

A computer-assisted surgery system comprises a calibrating instrument adapted to be applied to a pelvis in a known manner, and a surgical instrument. A computer-assisted processor unit operating a surgical assistance procedure and comprises at least one portable inertial sensor unit configured to be connected to the at least one calibrating instrument and the at least one surgical instrument, the portable inertial sensor unit outputting readings representative of its orientation. A geometrical relation data module provides a geometrical relation data between the orientation of the portable inertial sensor unit, of the calibrating instrument and of the surgical instrument. A coordinate system module sets a coordinate system of the pelvis in which an anterior-posterior axis of the pelvis is generally in a direction of gravity, and in which a medio-lateral axis of the pelvis is obtained from readings of the at least one portable inertial sensor unit on the calibrating instrument using the geometrical relation data therebetween. A tracking module tracks movements of the at least one surgical instrument relative to the coordinate system using readings from the inertial sensor unit on the surgical instrument using the geometrical relation data therebetween, and calculates navigation data for the movements, the navigation data relating the orientation of the surgical instrument to the orientation of the pelvis. An interface outputs the navigation data.

Instrument navigation in computer-assisted hip surgery

A method for establishing an interaction between an operator and a monitor of a computer-assisted surgery system comprises tracking a tool manipulated by the operator for providing surgical data calculated from the position/orientation of the tool. A desired interaction is identified from the operator by tracking the tool reaching a specific position and/or a specific orientation. An interactive action is activated on a monitor as a function of the desired interaction, the interactive action being unrelated to said surgical data. A motion of the tool is converted to additional interactions related to said interactive action. A computer-assisted surgery system is also provided.
