Apparatus and method for collecting, processing, and storing blood components, such as plasma. The method involves collecting the blood component in a flexible storage bag manufactured from ethylene vinyl acetate EVA, having a composition of between about 9% and about 18% vinyl acetate by weight of total EVA co-polymer. The EVA bag is sealed, and the sample is frozen in the bag at a temperature of at least as low as -30.degree. C. to form a substantially solid pellet contained in the storage bag. The bag then is fractured and the pellet is removed in its intact, frozen form. The co-polymer bag may have an inner surface with an etched or embossed pattern of sufficient dimensions to permit removal of the plasma in a frozen state from the storage bag.

Method and system for collecting, processing, and storing blood

Blood and blood component container having in continuous communication therewith a receptacle adapted to receive and define a given component or sub-component when contents in the container are separated. In preferred embodiments, the container is a flexible bag having a tapered portion adjacent the receptacle to assist migration of a given component or sub-component into the receptacle during centrifugation and at least a portion of the container is supported by a cup-like device, the inner surface of which conforms to the outer surface of the bag and communicating receptacle.

Container for fine separation of blood and blood components

Blood bag having affixed thereto a label, portions of which are adapted to permit enhanced gas transmissibility between the interior and exterior of the bag. In preferred embodiments the affixed label has an outwardly facing surface adapted to provide useful information about the bag or bag contents and an inwardly facing surface having raised portions and depressed portions with the label generally adhering to the bag surface via only the raised or selected raised portions.

Blood bag having label providing enhanced gas transmissibility

Frangible valve for a closed plastic bag system comprising an upper member having a bore and located within a port on a plastic bag and a solid lower member extending into the bag. The lower member is attached to the upper member by at least one tether and includes a bore-sealing portion attached to the upper member via a weakened portion. In use, the bore-sealing portion is separated from the upper member by external manipulation to permit fluid flow through the bore while the bore-sealing portion remains tethered to the valve. In preferred embodiments, two tethers are included on opposite sides of the bore-sealing portion and the tethered bore-sealing portion includes means for keeping it separated from the bore in a fully open position after the bore seal has been broken.
