A reflector target includes a reflector defining a tapered reflector surface. The reflector includes an apex opening and an opposed base opening, wherein the base opening has a larger perimeter than the apex opening. The tapered reflector surface extends between the openings forming a tapered passage there-between. The tapered reflector surface is configured to resist the accumulation of surface bubbles on the reflector surface by movement of bubbles along the reflector surface out through the apex opening.

Optical power uses light to run remote, isolated circuits without metallic wires. An optical power system may include a single photovoltaic component that supplies a first voltage in response to impingement of light on the photovoltaic component. A voltage booster receives the first voltage from the photovoltaic component and supplies a second voltage signal at a second voltage that is greater than the first voltage. The optical power system may be integrated with a sensor that is powered by the second voltage from the voltage booster. The photovoltaic component may be an inexpensive light emitting diode.

Optical power for electronic circuits using a single photovoltaic component

This disclosure is directed to apparatus for measuring height of a surface of liquid in a container utilizing a light source and camera pair disposed above the liquid surface in a predetermined spatial relationship to each other and the container. The light source illuminates the liquid surface with a light pattern and the camera captures the area image of the light pattern in a form of discrete picture elements (pixels) that are processed in an image processor to determine the height of liquid in the container. In another embodiment, the pixels of the area image are further processed to determine attitude of the liquid surface so that the processor may determine the quantity of liquid in the container based on the determined height and attitude of the liquid surface and container geometry data stored in a memory thereof. In yet another embodiment, a plurality of light source/camera pairs are disposed above the liquid surface, each pair operates by capturing an area image of the light pattern on a portion of the liquid surface illuminated by its light source. The pixels of the area image of each pair are processed in the image processor to determine the heights of the corresponding liquid surface portions. In still another embodiment, a plurality of cameras are disposed above the liquid surface to observe at least one light pattern at different viewing angles. Each camera captures an area image of the at least one light pattern and the pixels of such area images are processed in the image processor to determine at least one height for the liquid surface in the container. In this embodiment, the image processor may include an algorithm for combining together the pixels of the various area images of the plurality of cameras to determine the at least one liquid surface height.

Apparatus for measuring height of a liquid in a container using area image pattern recognition techniques

An optically coupled circuit is electrically coupleable to a capacitive probe transducer disposed in a liquid in a tank for sensing the capacitance of the probe transducer which is a measure of a parameter of the liquid. A first converter circuit receives optical energy over a non-conductive path and converts it into electrical energy at a predetermined voltage potential from which first and second reference voltage potentials are developed. A dual slope integrator circuit is coupleable to the probe capacitor for charging it during a first integration period and discharging it during a second integration period utilizing the first and second reference voltage potentials. The integrator circuit includes a circuit for comparing capacitive voltage generated during the first and second integration periods with the first and second reference voltage potentials to generate timing signals for each integration period. The timing signals from two successive integration periods are used for determining the capacitance of the probe transducer. A system and method of determining the probe capacitance are also disclosed.

Optically coupled sensor for application to combustible liquids

A liquid sensing apparatus for a fuel tank comprises a first optical sensor for producing an output having a first state that corresponds to the first optical sensor being exposed to air and a second state that corresponds to the first optical sensor being exposed to fuel; a second optical sensor for producing an output having a first state that corresponds to the second optical sensor being exposed to air or water, and a second state that corresponds to the second optical sensor being exposed to fuel; and a circuit for detecting the first and second optical sensor output states. The sensor circuits can be accessed using a two wire only interface, and thermal stability can be achieved with the electronic circuit as shown.

An optic sensor system comprising N optic sensors, each of the N sensors operating with received input light and providing output light having a characteristic corresponding to a sensed parameter; a number, less than N+2, of devices wherein each of the devices operates as a light source and as a light detector such that one device can be used to transmit interrogation light to two of the sensors, with two other of the devices being used to receive output light from the interrogated sensors; and optic waveguide means for transmitting light between the sensors and the devices.

Method and apparatus for determining jet fuel density. A microprocessor monitors the temperature, velocity of sound and dielectric constant of a jet fuel. The microprocessor determines the type of jet fuel and the density of the fuel using data from jet fuel samples of a known density and a least-squares-fit of the test data.

Density determination of aircraft fuel based on the sensed temperature

System and method of error reduction in which a comparator is sequentially operated to produce series of pulses in which the time distribution of the pulses is related to the displacement being monitored by the transducer. In particular, the comparator is sequentially operated to provide two sets of pulses using a positive ramp voltage, and then using a negative ramp voltage having a magnitude equal to the positive ramp voltage. Averaged time periods between the pulses are used to eliminate offset errors in the determination of the value that the transducer is monitoring. The transducer is adapted to monitor the substantially linear movement of the level (fuel-air interface) of fuel in a tank and the angular position of an input shaft.

System and method of error reduction for differential capacitive

A method and system determines the density of a liquid, such as aircraft fuel, by measuring the amplitude of the reflections of ultrasonic pulses from the faces of the walls of a reference material. A transducer is used to transmit an ultrasonic interrogation pulse through a liquid to the reference material. The density of the reference material is known, and its boundaries are well defined. The interrogation pulse is reflected from the faces of the reference material boundaries to provide first, second and third return pulses that can be used to determine the density of the liquid. The density determination is accomplished by determining characteristic impedances, reflection coefficients and transmission coefficients as a function of the returned pulse amplitudes.

System and method for ultrasonic determination of density

A displacement detector provides a light beam which impinges on an article with different combinations of light altering materials such as reflecting and non-reflecting surfaces, wave retarding plates, and linear polarizers attached to the article to determine angular position, relative angular displacement, and speed of rotatably mounted articles. These beam altering materials change either the polarization state or the magnitude of the light in a predictable manner. When used on different ends of a rotating shaft, the shaft speed and torsional displacement of the front shaft end with respect to the rear shaft end can be determined. When used with an article such as a rotatably mounted throttle, the angular displacement of the throttle can be determined.

Optical shaft angular and torsional displacement and speed sensing system

A rotating shaft torsional displacement and speed detector provides a light beam which impinges on one or both ends of the rotating shaft. Different combinations of beam altering materials such as reflecting and non-reflecting surfaces, wave retarding plates, and linear polarizers are attached to the front shaft end and rear shaft end. These beam altering materials change either the polarization or magnitude of the light beam in a predictable manner that allows for the detection of shaft speed and torsional displacement of the front shaft end with respect to the rear shaft end.
