A magnetostrictive actuator, comprising: a magnetostrictive member which elongates upon application of a magnetic field; a translating member mechanically coupled to the magnetostrictive member, for translating the change in length of the magnetostrictive member into a desired action; and a selectively-energized coil surrounding the magnetostrictive member, to apply a magnetic field to the magnetostrictive member, and thus selectively change the length of the magnetostrictive member, and thereby cause the translating member to create the desired action.

The invention relates to a processing method for fabricating a superconducting magnetic coil using a mandrel having a consumable component. When exposed to a final processing step, the consumable component is mechanically weakened through oxidation or thermal decomposition. The mandrel can then be easily removed from the coil without straining the conductor, thus preserving the coil's electrical and mechanical properties.

A high temperature superconductor lead assembly for reduces the heat leak into a cryocooled magnet system includes a superconductor and a first lead connector bonded to a first end of the superconductor. The lead connector includes an electrically insulating, thermally conductive ceramic mount for attachment to a mechanical cryocooler for cooling the connector. The superconductor is in the form of a stack of ribbons. The superconductor is attached to an electrically and thermally insulating support. A cryocooled magnet system includes a mechanical cryocooler having a warm end and a cold end, a superconductor magnet maintained at a temperature of the cold end of the cryocooler, two superconductor leads, and two current carrying leads for supplying power to the superconductor leads.

A vibration isolator particularly suited to isolating a closed cycle refrigerator in a cryopump includes two bellows covered with vibration damping material and separated by an intermediate mass. The damping material fills the spaces between corrugations of the bellows and is bonded to the bellows. A dynamic absorber operates to attenuate vibrations of a partucular frequency from being transmitted into the refrigerator from a drive unit of the cryopump.
