Two-port optical retro-reflectors with high isolation and high return loss are described. Such retro-reflectors are designed to increase the number of optical filtering using one or more filters uniquely disposed to increase the isolation and return loss.

Techniques for monitoring optical power, dispersion and mode distribution in high speed multimode fiber are described. According to one aspect of the present invention, a multimode optical tap filter is disclosed. The tap filter is dispersionless and tap ratio independent, and packaged in a 3-port form factor. To be efficient in cost, at least two such optical tab filters are packaged in one device while sharing a single thin film filter provided to reflect a predefined portion of a signal being monitored.

Techniques for monitoring optical power, dispersion and mode distribution in high speed multimode fiber are described. According to one aspect of the present invention, a multimode optical tap filter is described. In one aspect of the present invention, an optical tap filter is a dispersionless optical tap filter in bi-directional multimode fiber optic link. The optical tap filter includes at least two parts optically engaged with a broadband thin film filter and taps out a monitoring signal from a communication signal according to a ratio set by the broadband thin film filter.

Designs of pluggable optical passive devices are described. Such a pluggable optical passive device can be inserted into an existing configuration. According to one embodiment, the pluggable optical passive device is formed as an elongated enclosure with one or two first connectors on one side thereof and one or two second connectors on the other side thereof. The first connectors are provided to be coupled to female pluggers while the second connectors are provided to be coupled to male pluggers. Depending on implementation, the first and second connectors may be glued onto or skewed into the enclosure through holes, and may be further extended by a flexible pigtailed dual LC connector.
