Method is provided for applying a cement mixture to a honeycomb body including the step of aligning a first end of the honeycomb body with respect to a first longitudinal axis of a first support member. The method further includes the step of aligning a second support member with respect to the second end of the honeycomb body. The second support member is allowed to move relative to the first support member such that a second longitudinal axis of second support member is not coincident with the first longitudinal axis. The method further includes the step of fixing the position of the honeycomb body with respect to the first support member and the second support member. The method still further includes the step of applying a cement mixture to the honeycomb body. An apparatus is provided that is configured to apply a cement mixture to a honeycomb body.

Method and apparatus for aligning a support with respect to a honeycomb body

A method for producing a ceramic honeycomb structure comprises providing a honeycomb body having a side surface, a first cut end surface, a second cut end surface opposite the first end surface, and a maximum width (W), and removing material from at least one of the cut end surfaces of the honeycomb body to reduce the length (L), wherein the step of removing material comprises abrasively removing material from at least one of the ends with a rotating abrasive tool, such as by grinding, and wherein L/W is greater than 0.75. The method may achieve end flatness, parallelism, surface roughness and length accuracy, or combinations thereof which heretofore, were unachievable. Face finished ceramic honeycomb structures having low surface roughness (Ra), high degree of parallelism and accurate lengths are also disclosed.

A method for plugging selected cell channels in a honeycomb structure for the fabrication of a solid particulate filter. The method includes covering a first end face of the honeycomb structure with a mask having openings corresponding to open ends of a first plurality of cell channels; loading powdered plugging material from through the mask openings into the first plurality of cell channels; forming plugs in the first plurality of cell channels at ends opposite the first end face of the honeycomb structure; loading powdered plugging material into the open ends of a second plurality of cell channels open at the second end face of the honeycomb structure; and forming plugs in the second plurality of cell channels at the ends adjacent the first end face of the honeycomb structure.
