A power generation system includes a fuel cell including an anode that generates a tail gas. The system also includes a hydrocarbon fuel reforming system that mixes a hydrocarbon fuel with the fuel cell tail gas and to convert the hydrocarbon fuel and fuel tail gas into a reformed fuel stream including CO. The reforming system further splits the reformed fuel stream into a first portion and a second portion. The system further includes a COremoval system coupled in flow communication with the reforming system. The system also includes a first reformed fuel path coupled to the reforming system. The first path channels the first portion of the reformed fuel stream to an anode inlet. The system further includes a second reformed fuel path coupled to the reforming system. The second path channels the second portion of the reformed fuel stream to the COremoval system.

Fuel cell reforming system with carbon dioxide removal

An Organic Rankine Cycle system includes a turbine driven by a working fluid and a generator driven by the turbine. The turbine includes a rotor volume that is at sub-atmospheric pressure, and the working fluid is sprayed into the rotor volume. The turbine can be arranged in a primary circuit that also includes, in flow series from the turbine, a condenser, a first pump, and an evaporator. The rotor volume can be arranged in a secondary cooling circuit that includes, in flow series from the rotor volume, a heat exchanger, a second pump, and a restriction valve located downstream of the second pump and upstream of the rotor volume.

Hermetic motor cooling for high temperature organic Rankine cycle system

A flow control assembly for controlling cooling flow of a turbine engine is provided. The flow control assembly includes a first flow control device having a first sidewall and a second sidewall. The first sidewall is coupled to a compressor vane and is configured to define a first flow path from a compressor to a turbine vane. The second sidewall is coupled to a compressor vane and is configured to define a second flow path from the compressor to a turbine blade. A second flow control device is coupled to the compressor and includes an orifice device coupled to the compressor vane and a meter device coupled to the orifice, wherein the orifice is configured to direct a cooling flow to the meter device. A controller is configured to control the meter device to facilitate regulating the cooling flow into at least one of the first flow path and the second flow path.

Flow control assembly and methods of assembling the same

A turbomachine includes a housing and a rotatable shaft, where at least a portion of the rotatable shaft is located in the housing. The turbomachine also includes a magnetic thrust bearing that axially positions the rotatable shaft and a radial bearing that centers the rotatable shaft. The turbomachine includes a flexure including a first portion secured to the housing and a second portion axially moveable relative to the first portion. The second portion of the flexure is connected to the radial bearing, and the second portion moves axially to eliminate thrust loads on the radial bearing and allow the magnetic thrust bearing to carry axial loads.

Hybrid bearing turbomachine

A swept turbomachinery blade for use in a cascade of such blades is disclosed. The blade () has an airfoil () uniquely swept so that an endwall shock () of limited radial extent and a passage shock () are coincident and a working medium () flowing through interblade passages () is subjected to a single coincident shock rather than the individual shocks. In one embodiment of the invention the forwardmost extremity of the airfoil defines an inner transition point () located at an inner transition radius r-inner. The sweep angle of the airfoil is nondecreasing with increasing radius from the inner transition radius to an outer transition radius r, radially inward of the airfoil tip (), and is nonincreasing with increasing radius between the outer transition radius and the airfoil tip.

Swept turbomachinery blade

An Organic Rankine Cycle system is combined with a fuel cell system, with the working fluid of the Organic Rankine Cycle system being integrated directly into the cooling system for the fuel cell. The waste heat from the fuel cell is therefore applied directly to preheat and evaporate the working fluid in the Organic Rankine Cycle system to thereby provide improved efficiencies in the system.

Integration of an organic rankine cycle with a fuel cell

A system and method are provided for boosting overall performance of a fuel cell while simultaneously separating a nearly pure stream of COfor sequestration or for use in generating electrical power to further increase overall efficiency of the process. The system and method employ a heat exchanger system configured to generate a stream of fuel that is returned to the inlet of the fuel cell anode with a higher molar concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H) fuel than was initially present in the fuel cell anode outlet.

A method and system for recovering oil is used in an organic rankine cycle (ORC) system to recover oil from an evaporator of the ORC system and return the oil to an oil sump. The ORC system includes an evaporator, a turbine, a condenser and a pump, and is configured to circulate a refrigerant through the ORC system. The oil recovery system includes a recovery line configured to remove a mixture of oil and refrigerant from the evaporator. The mixture of oil and refrigerant passes through a heat exchanger in order to vaporize liquid refrigerant in the mixture and produce a mixture of oil and vaporized refrigerant. A delivery line is configured to deliver the mixture of oil and vaporized refrigerant to the turbine, at which point the oil may be separated from the vaporized refrigerant and recycled back to the oil sump.

Oil recovery from an evaporator of an organic rankine cycle (ORC) system

A variable nozzle system can comprise a gas inlet ring, an opposing gas outlet ring, an actuation ring, guides, and vanes circumferentially spaced about and disposed between the gas inlet ring and the gas outlet ring. The gas inlet ring, the gas outlet ring, and the vanes can form nozzles, the nozzles being variable by rotation of the vanes about a pivot axis. The plurality of guides can extend from the gas inlet ring, the gas outlet ring, or the actuation ring, and the vanes can be connected to the actuation ring, so that each vane can be rotated by rotation of the actuation ring and by sliding against a respective guide from the plurality of guides. The actuation ring can have a gear rack and can be rotated by rotatable engagement of the gear rack with a pinion attached to the end of a rotatable gear shaft.

Rotatable vaned nozzle for a radial inflow turbine

A pair of organic Rankine cycle systems () are combined and their respective organic working fluids are chosen such that the organic working fluid of the first organic Rankine cycle is condensed at a condensation temperature that is well above the boiling point of the organic working fluid of the second organic Rankine style system, and a single common heat exchanger () is used for both the condenser of the first organic Rankine cycle system and the evaporator of the second organic Rankine cycle system. A preferred organic working fluid of the first system is toluene and that of the second organic working fluid is R245fa.

Cascaded organic rankine cycles for waste heat utilization

A machine designed as a centrifugal compressor is applied as an organic rankine cycle turbine by operating the machine in reverse. In order to accommodate the higher pressures when operating as a turbine, a suitable refrigerant is chosen such that the pressures and temperatures are maintained within established limits. Such an adaptation of existing, relatively inexpensive equipment to an application that may be otherwise uneconomical, allows for the convenient and economical use of energy that would be otherwise lost by waste heat to the atmosphere.

Power generation with a centrifugal compressor

A power conversion system which uses a plurality of transistors to convert DC power to AC power is made more efficient by the use of liquid refrigerant to cool the transistors. A plurality of passages are formed in a cold plate on which the transistors are mounted, and liquid refrigerant is flashed into the passages to cool the cold plate and the transistors. The liquid refrigerant can by derived from a condenser from an organic rankine cycle or a vapor compression cycle.
