A carbon disulfide-modified amine additive may be introduced to an aqueous stream in an effective amount to separate oil from the water in the aqueous stream, such as separating at least some of the oil from emulsified oil-in-water in a production fluid, where the oil is crude oil. The carbon disulfide-modified amine additive may be produced from a reaction of synthetic amine, natural amines, or chemically modified natural amines with carbon disulfide and an α,β-unsaturated compound and/or an epoxide in one step. In one non-limiting embodiment, the amine is a natural amine or chemically modified natural amine of a polysaccharide containing amino functional group(s). Optionally, a base catalyst is used to make the carbon disulfide-modified amine additive.

Methods and additives for reducing fouling in water coolers in Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage systems (SAGD) are described in which an additive comprising a cationic starch, either alone or in combination with a water clarifier compound, is introduced into a SAGD system, wherein a lower amount of the additive is used to achieve the same or better results in reducing fouling in the water coolers as compared to an otherwise identical method absent the additive.

A system for monitoring phase separation is disclosed. The system includes a temperature control housing having an inlet and an outlet connection for a circulator; a bottle holder positioned inside the housing, the bottle holder having a body with a plurality of recesses for receiving test bottles, each recess having a back surface, a front opening, and a first light scanning component mounted on the back surface of the recess; a sleeve having a plurality of second light scanning components mounted thereon, the sleeve being disposed between the housing and the bottle holder, and each second light scanning component being aligned with one of the first light scanning components; and a lid latched onto the housing to hold the test bottles in place during testing.
