The disclosed invention includes all embodiments for a mechanical shuffler comprising a generally planar base and a platform that is sized to receive a deck of unshuffled cards, the stack of unshuffled cards moves relative to a slot where the slot is sized to permit passage of a single card. With movement of a platform relative to a slot, a discrete burst of air is delivered to a stack of unshuffled cards, thereby pushing a single card through the slot and into an area where shuffled cards are to be delivered. It is contemplated that embodiments of the invention will include means for the delivery of a discrete amount of air in response to a computer signal, it is further contemplated that embodiments of the invention may include rollers that are engaged to spin and grip a card that is pushed through a slot by air. It is contemplated that embodiments of the invention may include a set of perforated guiding members that include a plurality of perforations that are sized to permit and diffuse a predetermined amount of air by volume and pressure.

The present disclosure introduces a simple method for an Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system for determining quantities of a consumed utility product including electric, gas, and water service, using wireless data transfer. To compensate for the frequency drifts of the transmitters, the embodiments of this invention, with minimum pre-processing of the received data, allow for on-the-fly adjustability of the receiver bandwidth by merely changing a pre-calculated weighting function. As such, it is possible to use a fixed size Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), or in particular a fixed N-point Fast Fourier Transform, for signals of different bandwidths.

A centrifugal blood separator for separating whole blood into at least two blood fractions such as a plasma fraction and a blood cell fraction is disclosed. The blood separator has a centrifuge vessel with a separation chamber having at least two sections with different diametric sizes. The large diameter section collects the heavier blood cell fraction during centrifugation. The smaller diameter section collects the lighter plasma fraction. Fluid communication subassemblies preferably have a feed conduit, a product or an outflow conduit and a vent which are mounted in a non-rotatable part and positioned in an extending or extendible manner into the separation chamber to allow blood fractions to be removed while the centrifuge vessel is rotating or after rotation has stopped depending upon specifics of the particular embodiment.

A system for high performance automated chemical analysis includes a video camera photometer with a computer-controlled interference filter wheel. A fluidics system delivers ultramicro sample and reagent volumes in the 0.05 to 5.0 microliter range to a supporting analytical media. The media is precisely positioned relative to the photometer by an x-y axis reaction media holder capable of accurate and precise positioning of the ultramicro reaction spots. The reaction media can consist of absorbent cellulose sample/reaction strips or microscopic sized multiple wells. A data and reduction system monitors multiple simultaneous reactions within a common test area of the analytical media to provide final quantitative reports. The method for conducting multiple chemical assays involves placing small volumes of sample/reagent combinations at discrete locations about a common test area on the analytical media and simultaneously measuring resulting optical changes at each discrete location.

An automatic chemical analyzer utilizes reagents supplied in reagent bottles. The reagent bottles are labeled on their bottom surfaces with an identification label bearing a machine-readable identification code. The automatic chemical analyzer includes a reagent tray having a plurality of tray apertures therein which receive coded reagent bottles and which expose the bottom surface of each bottle for optical viewing of the machine-readable identification code. The analyzer further includes optical scanner means positioned below the reagent tray for reading the machine-readable identification code on the bottom surfaces of reagent bottles within the tray apertures. The tray apertures are selectively located over the optical scanner means so that the analyzer can identify the reagent bottle and the contents thereof. The identification label has a spaced pair of position reference dots defining and orienting a label area. A plurality of bit fields surround the position reference dots, their positions being defined by the position reference dots. Each bit field maps to a single bit of a multi-bit binary bottle identification code. Bit dots are printed in selected bit fields to define the binary value of each bit of the multi-bit binary identification code.

The automatic chemical analyzer includes a turntable adapted to hold a plurality of disposable cuvettes. An optical system adjacent to the turntable can perform analytical absorbance or fluorescence tests on the contents of each cuvette as they are rotated on the turntable. A sample/reagent tray is rotatably mounted about an axis parallel to the turntable axis. A common probe arm pivoted about a third parallel axis mounts a pipette that can be moved along an arcuate path intersecting a cuvette access station on the turntable and at least one container access station on the sample/reagent tray for transferring liquids as required by specific test procedures. A sample tube entry port is provided to support individual draw tubes that are manually delivered to the analyzer at a sample access station and to facilitate removal of samples by the pipette without exposing operating personnel to accidental contact with liquid materials in the draw tube.

A compact optical test system for a chemical analyzer comprises a light-proof enclosure formed by two joined side compartments. One includes control surfaces for accurately positioning optical elements along desired light paths. The other includes retaining surfaces to maintain the optical elements in a centered position across the parting line of the two compartments. A single light source is used for both absorbance and fluorescence polarization measurement purposes.

A disposable cuvette is molded of rigid transparent plastic resin that is impervious to liquids to be handled within it. The cuvette has a rectangular cross section. Identical side walls extend between upper and lower ends of each cuvette, the upper end being open for reception of liquids and the lower end being closed. Recessed optical surface areas at the lower end are perpendicular to one another for optical testing of the cuvette contents. An elongated cartridge holds a stack of abutting cuvettes to facilitate their handling.

The automatic chemical analyzer includes a turntable adapted to hold a plurality of disposable cuvettes. An optical system adjacent to the turntable can perform tests on the contents of each cuvette as they are rotated on the turntable. A sample/reagent tray is rotatably mounted about an axis parallel to the turntable axis. A common probe arm pivoted about a third parallel axis mounts a pipette that can be moved along an arcuate path intersecting a cuvette access station on the turntable and at least one container access station on the sample/reagent tray for transferring liquids as required by specific test procedures. A wash/alignment station is provided to facilitate flushing on the pipette between liquid deliveries. Combined within it is an alignment plate that checks the radial position of the pipette relative to the probe arm axis and the elevation of the pipette tip relative to the supporting instrument framework. A capacitive sensing system is used to detect liquid level elevations during liquid transfers. It also is used for pipette alignment purposes.

A sample tube entry port for an automatic chemical analyzer supports individual draw tubes that are manually delivered to the analyzer at a sample access station. The entry port facilitates removal of samples by the pipette without exposing operating personnel to accidental contact with liquid materials in the draw tube. To accommodate draw tubes of differing heights, the apparatus includes a stripper that is selectively locked onto an elevationally movable ram carrying a receptacle for receiving a draw tube. A spring-biased tube clamp urges each draw tube against guides within the receptacle to center draw tubes of differing diameters. During operation of the apparatus, the receptacle is first lowered to a predetermined elevation, then raised to an intermediate elevation at which a draw tube closure is properly positioned for placement of the stripper immediately adjacent to its upper surface. The stripper is locked relative to the ram in this elevational relationship, which is maintained as the closure is impaled on the puncture tube and/or the pipette that accesses the contents of the draw tube.
