A combined main air/O enriched product compressor for use with an air separation unit that produces O enriched product is provided that includes a prime mover that drives a bull gear. The bull gear drives at least two pinion gears, and the pinion gears drive several compression stages where at least one compression stage compresses feed air for the air separation unit and at least one compressor stage compresses O enriched product from the air separation unit. The combined main air/O enriched product compressor satisfies all air separation unit feed air requirements and at least some compression for the oxygen product from the air separation unit. A method is also provided.

Oxygen-enhanced combustion in a manufacturing plant using a nitrogen plant to obtain a nitrogen product stream for use in the plant is effected by utilizing the oxygen-rich vent, waste, or exhaust stream as the primary source of oxidant for combustion of fuel in burners used to heat furnaces and the like in the same plant. Processes according to the invention employ a vent stream in place of a high purity oxygen stream for oxy-fuel combustion, oxygen lancing, and oxygen boosting.

The process of the present invention is a cryogenic air separation process with three important features: (1) at least a portion of a nitrogen-rich liquid from the column system is boosted in pressure before being vaporized and delivered as a product; (2) at least a portion of the feed air is at least partially condensed in indirect heat exchange with the boosted pressure, nitrogen-rich stream; and (3) a portion of the liquid nitrogen condensed from the vapor nitrogen from the top of the higher pressure column is returned to the higher pressure column as reflux with the remaining portion being removed from the column system.

The present invention relates to an improvement to a cryogenic air separation process having an argon sidearm column. The improvement to the process for maximizing argon recovery comprises effectuating the intimate contact of the liquid phase stream and the vapor phase stream in the low pressure column and the argon sidearm column of an integrated multi-column, e.g. three column, cryogenic distillation system by utilizing a structured or ordered packing.
