Decrypting synthetic transactions with beacon packets is provided. A probe receives, from a client device, a start beacon packet that identifies a test of a service provided by one or more servers. The probe establishes, responsive to receipt of the start beacon packet, a log for the test. The probe stores, in the log established responsive to the start beacon packet, data packets transmitted between the client device and the one or more servers subsequent to the start beacon packet and encrypted with a key using a security protocol. The probe receives, from the client device, key information used to decrypt the data packets of the test encrypted with the key using the security protocol. The probe provides at least one of the data packets for evaluation or decryption using the key information to determine a performance of the service.

A system for testing a Voice over IP (VoIP) network is provided. The system includes a monitoring probe connected to the VoIP network. The monitoring probe is configured to answer an incoming call and monitor the VoIP network, in response to receiving the incoming call. The monitoring probe is also configured to terminate the incoming call after a pre-defined period of time. The monitoring probe is further configured to send a quality report indicative of VoIP network performance. The system further includes a mobile device for placing the call to the monitoring probe.

The network management device monitors data traffic between hosts communicating over the network and collects WAN optimization information relating to the data traffic. The data traffic includes individual flows between the hosts, and the individual flows include individual transactions involving exchanges of packets. The processor computes at least one performance metric for individual transactions between the hosts and determines what types, if any, of WAN optimization were applied to the individual transactions. The display device displays on an individual transaction basis the performance metric in combination with either the types of WAN optimization applied to the individual transaction or an indication that no WAN optimization was applied to the individual transaction.

An apparatus for determining and displaying a transaction reset metric of individual transactions between host devices operating over a network includes a network management device, a processor, and a display device. The network management device monitors flows between the hosts, where the individual flows include individual transactions involving exchanges of packets. The network management device identifies flow resets that terminate flows between hosts. The processor evaluates the flow resets by identifying each flow reset that occurred during an incomplete transaction as a transaction reset and computes a transaction reset count metric as the sum of transaction resets that occur. The processor also identifies individual transactions terminated by a transaction reset. The display device displays on an individual transaction basis whether or not individual transactions were terminated by a transaction reset and displays the transaction reset count metric for selected portions of the network under test.

A method of testing ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) circuits is provided. A test instrument is connected to the customer premises end of the ADSL circuit, consisting of an ATU-C modem on the central office end and an ATU-R modem on the customer premises end, with a twisted-pair telephone line connecting the ATU-R and ATU-C modems. A remote test instrument is coupled to the ATU-C modem, typically on a semi-permanent basis in the central office, dedicated for testing multiple ADSL circuits by communicating with multiple ATU-C modems via a switch or router. The test instrument and remote test instrument communicate with each other in full duplex via the ADSL circuit using Internet Protocol (IP) data packets. The test instrument generates the upstream data traffic, controls the test sequence, and controls and coordinates the throughput test with the remote test instrument. The remote test instrument sends the downstream data traffic and returns the results of the throughput test in the form of frame counts from its end of the ADSL circuit back to the test instrument at end of the test sequence. The results from the upstream and downstream throughput tests are then visually displayed to the user of the test instrument.

In a test instrument for testing local area networks (LANs), a method for identifying network device types on a LAN operating according to the TCP/IP protocol suite using passive monitoring is provided. A test instrument is coupled to the LAN to passively receive traffic in the form of frames that are being sent between the nodes on the LAN. The frames being sent may contain information that may be uniquely associated with specific types of network devices such as servers, routers, printers. A frame processor collects and extracts the frame information from the frames, including the message type and source IP address. The frame information is compared against sets of frame types, with each set of frame types uniquely associated with one of the network device types. The device types as detected are added to a station database.
