A sealing device for sealing a free end of a generally tubular object, the sealing device comprising: a main body comprising either a sleeve which may, when the sealing device is engaged with the free end of a generally tubular object, surround the free end of the generally tubular object, or a protrusion which may, when the sealing device is engaged with the free end of the generally tubular object, be inserted into the interior of the free end of the generally tubular object; a grip arrangement which is connected to or supported by the main body, and positioned to lie against or adjacent a surface of the generally tubular object when the sealing device is engaged with the free end of the generally tubular object, wherein the grip arrangement is radially moveable with respect to a central axis of the main body; and a grip drive arrangement operable to drive the grip arrangement radially with respect to the central axis of the main body, towards the surface of the generally tubular object.

Apparatus for sealing a pipe

A swivel anchor of a drill string comprises a slip arrangement, comprising a slip body and at least one slip element; upper and lower connections attachable to further components, wherein the slip arrangement is rotatable about a longitudinal axis with respect to the upper and lower connections and a slip joint, comprising upper and lower components, wherein the upper and lower components may move relative to each other parallel with a longitudinal axis, between an open and closed positions, wherein in the open position a longitudinal displacement between the upper and lower components is greater than when the slip joint is in the closed position, and wherein when the slip joint is in the closed position, the swivel anchor length is less than when in the open position.

Swivel anchor

A ship security device is disclosed including a barrier and a panel. The security device may transition between a first configuration and a second configuration. In the first configuration the security device is unassembled and at least the barrier may be arranged in a storage configuration in which the barrier curves or bends through a first angle, and in the second configuration the security device is assembled in an arrangement for use, in which the security device may be assembled around a rail. In the second configuration at least a part of the panel is orientated to be substantially vertical, and the barrier is curved, bent or folded through a second angle, which is greater than the first angle, to protrude away from the panel in a horizontal direction, perpendicular from a plane extending vertically through the rail, to provide an overhang on an exterior side of the rail.

Ship security barrier

A whipstock comprises a longitudinal axis, a first end and a second end, and a tapering deflection section extending at least part of the way between the first end and the second end. The deflection section has a rear face. The deflection section has a front face, which in use will deflect a milling arrangement in a direction having a component which is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the whipstock. The front face has first and second side edges and a width defined between the first and second side edges. A depth of the deflection section is defined as a distance between the rear face and the front face. At at least one point along the length of the deflection surface, the depth of the deflection section at a distance from the first side edge is greater than the depth of the deflection section at the same distance from the second side edge.

Whipstock

A cutting tool includes an elongate main body having inlet and outlet ends with a fluid flow path defined therebetween. A piston is mounted within the main body and longitudinally movable with respect to the main body. One or more cutters are moveable between retracted and deployed positions. The piston and each cutter engage one another so that longitudinal movement of the piston with respect to the main body moves each cutter between the deployed position and the retracted position. A flow regulator is operable to divert fluid flowing into the inlet end of the tool selectively along a first path, which passes the through the piston to the outlet end of the tool, and a second path, in which the fluid tends to drive the piston longitudinally with respect to the main body.

Tool and method for cutting the casing of a bore hole

A tool for milling a window in a casing () of a borehole, the tool comprising: a main body having a longitudinal axis wherein, when the tool is run into a borehole, the longitudinal axis is substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the borehole, the main body comprising a deflection surface () which is disposed at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis; a milling arrangement comprising a milling head () and a guidance surface (), wherein the guidance surface is disposed at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tool and is in contact with the deflection surface; and a drive arrangement () which is operable to effect relative longitudinal movement between the main body and the milling arrangement.

Apparatus and method for milling a window in a borehole

A security device comprising: a barrier, and a plate, wherein the barrier and the plate are releasably attachable to each other, and when the barrier and plate are attached the device comprises a slot for receiving a rail and the device may hang on a rail with the rail received in the slot, and the barrier protrudes in a horizontal direction, perpendicular from a plane extending downwardly from the rail, to provide an overhang; and wherein at least a portion of the plate is made from a bullet-resistant material.

A security device comprising: a plate () having an upper portion () and a lower portion (), wherein the upper portion and the lower portion are parallel and off-set; a bulbous barrier (), wherein the upper portion of the plate and the barrier form a slot () therebetween, and the barrier extends in a direction perpendicular to the upper portion of the plane of the plate and away from the slot.

Security barrier comprising: a substantially planar support element () having top and bottom edges, wherein respective top and bottom first attachment sites are formed at the top and bottom edges; and a bulbous barrier element (), which is separate from the support element, having top and a bottom edges and respective top and bottom second attachment sites formed at the top and bottom edges, with a curved protruding section extending between the top and bottom edges, the protruding section extending away from the plane containing the top and bottom edges, wherein the support element and the barrier element are releasably connected to each other by way of the first and second top and bottom attachment sites, so that the support element and barrier element define an internal space therebetween which receives a horizontal rail, and wherein the security barrier may rest on the rail, a vertical plane being defined between the rail and the surface, so that the rail lies at or near the top edge of the support element and of the barrier element, the support element extends close to the vertical plane, and the protruding section protrudes outwardly from the vertical plane.

An insulating component for inclusion in a down hole drill string comprising a first part or connected group of parts, and a second part or group of parts. The first part or group of parts includes a first connection site and the second part or connected group of parts includes a second connection site. The insulating component also includes a first right-hand threaded connection located between the first connection site and the second connection site, and a second, left-hand threaded connection located between the first connection site and the second connection site. The first part or group of parts is electrically insulated from the second part or group of parts through insulating material provided between the first part or group of parts and the second part or group of parts, so that the first and second connection sites are electrically insulated from one another.

The invention relates to methods of determining whether a wellbore sealing operation has been performed correctly, and to wellbore-lining tubing which facilitates the determination of whether a wellbore sealing operation has been performed correctly. The invention has a utility in determining whether cement has been correctly supplied into an annular region defined between an internal wall of a wellbore and an external surface of a wellbore-lining tubing located in the wellbore, or whether a packer has been properly set to seal such an annular region. One disclosed method comprises the steps of: locating a wellbore-lining tubing () in a wellbore (), said tubing having at least one pressure sensor (); performing a wellbore sealing operation in an annular region () defined between an external surface of said tubing and an internal surface () of a wall of the wellbore, or between an external surface of said tubing and an internal surface of another wellbore-lining tubing () in which said tubing is located, to seal said tubing in the wellbore; monitoring the pressure of fluid in the annular region using the at least one pressure sensor; and recovering data concerning the pressure of the fluid monitored by the sensor to surface, the pressure data indicating whether the wellbore sealing operation has been performed correctly.

Determining whether a wellbore sealing operation has been performed correctly

A method of communication comprising: providing a string of a plurality of connected components (), one or more vessels running along the string to form a continuous fluid path (); incorporating a device () into the string so that the device is in communication with the fluid path; inserting the string into a borehole () so that the device is located below a surface into which the borehole is formed and the fluid path extends from the surface to the device; providing a pressure sensor at the surface, adapted to sense the pressure of the fluid in the fluid path; filling it with a pressurized fluid; over a communication period, venting fluid, under the control of the device, from the fluid path () to an exterior of the string () at the device on occasions, so that the resulting decrease in pressure in the fluid in the fluid path can be detected by the pressure sensor; and during the communication period introducing fluid into the fluid path at a rate below 30 gallons/minute [0.113 m3/minute].

Method and apparatus for communicating with a device located in a borehole

Disclosed is an apparatus for setting an anchor in a borehole and milling a window in a side surface of the borehole in a single trip. The apparatus includes a mechanically-settable anchor initially forming part of the drill string, a plug member position below the anchor, and a milling assembly. When the drill string reaches a desired depth in the wellbore, the plug member may be activated from the surface, thus setting the plug member in position with respect to the wellbore. The anchor has an activation element which, when contacted in a predetermined manner, sets the anchor. The plug member has an operation element adapted so that, when the anchor and plug member come into contact with one another in a predetermined orientation, the activation element is operated by the operation element, thus setting the anchor.

Apparatus and method for setting a tool in a borehole

Bypass valve comprising a ported housing () and concentrical ported sleeve (). Ported piston () is slidably arranged within the sleeve. Between sleeve and piston is a control system consisting of control element () fixed to sleeve () by means of plugs () passing through apertures () and holes (). Noses () protrude into recesses () of drive element (). Saw teeth () on drive element () interact with teeth () on rotatable timing element (). Key () on element () interacts with teeth () on control element (). Lower end () of key is abutting against ridge () formed on inner surface of sleeve (). when key () is engaged to teeth (), teeth () on elements () are misaligned. Pressure increase results in piston () and drive element () moving downward freeing key () from engagement with teeth (). Teeth () are forced into alignment with subsequent rotation of timing element (). In this position, ports on piston and sleeve are partially aligned. Pressure decrease results in element () moving up key () moving to next notch of teeth (). When key () coincides with slot (), piston () moves further down, partially occluding piston ports. When key () coincides with slot () piston () moves even further down totally occluding piston ports.

Bypass valve for use in well bores

A whipstock with a longitudinal axis includes a tapered face surface, at least a part of which is inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis, for guiding a milling head as the milling head passes from a top end to a bottom end of the face surface. A deflecting arrangement protrudes from the face surface and has first and second deflection surfaces. At least a part of each of the deflection surfaces is raised above the face surface, and each of the first and second deflection surfaces are inclined at a greater angle with respect to the longitudinal axis than the face surface in the region of the deflection arrangement. The first deflection surface is located closer to the top end of the face surface than the second deflection surface.
