A method and apparatus for generating transpiration cooling using an oxidized porous HTA layer metallurgically bonded to a substrate having micro-channel architectures. The method and apparatus generates a porous HTA layer by spreading generally spherical HTA powder particles on a substrate, partially sintering under Ovacuum until the porous HTA layer exhibits a porosity between 20% and 50% and a neck size ratio between 0.1 and 0.5, followed by a controlled oxidation generating an oxidation layer of alumina, chromia, or silica at a thickness of about 20 to about 500 nm. In particular embodiments, the oxidized porous HTA layer and the substrate comprise Ni as a majority element. In other embodiments, the oxidized porous HTA layer and the substrate further comprise Al, and in additional embodiments, the oxidized porous HTA layer and the substrate comprise &#x3b3;-Ni+&#x3b3;'-NiAl.

The layer system includes a substrate a substrate, at least one MCrX layer on the substrate, and a chromium-rich layer on or in the at least one MCrX layer. X includes at least one element selected from the group consisting of yttrium (Y), silicon (Si), aluminum (Al) and boron (B). M includes at least one element selected from the group consisting of nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co).

Slurry coating compositions are provided for metal substrates, particularly nickel or cobalt-containing alloys, that enable inward-type diffusion aluminide coatings having a substantially uniform coating thickness to be formed thereon. Substantially uniform coating thicknesses are achieved independent of applied slurry composition thickness or application method. The slurry coating composition of the invention comprises a Cr&mdash;Al alloy containing about 50 wt % to about 80 wt % Cr in the alloy, LiF in an amount greater than or equal to 0.3 wt % of the Cr&mdash;Al alloy, an organic binder, and a solvent.

A method for removing surface layers of a metal coating is disclosed. The method comprises applying an aluminum containing slurry to the surface of the metal coating, melting and diffusing the aluminum to form an aluminide layer within the surface of the metal coating, and removing the aluminide layer.

The oxidation and corrosion resistance of a nickel-base alloy are enhanced by a process which includes first enriching the surface of an alloy substrate with platinum, as by electrolytic deposition, and then simultaneously diffusing aluminum and silicon from a molten state into the platinum-enriched substrate. A spray booth includes an outer enclosure in which the temperature and humidity of a fluid (such as air) is not controlled and a fluid handling unit within this enclosure, which circulates and controls the temperature and humidity of a smaller volume of the same fluid (air) to develop an environment suitable for application of coatings to desired substrates. In use, fluid is drawn from the outer enclosure into the inner, fluid handling unit in order to clean and modify the temperature and humidity of the fluid being handled, conditioning it to be delivered to the region of limited size which is established for receiving the substrate to be coated.

A coated article (10) and method of making the same is disclosed wherein the coated article (10) includes a substrate (12) consisting essentially of titanium or titanium alloy and an outer coating (14) of thermoplastic resin for protecting the substrate from chemical degradation and maintaining stability during exposure to temperatures of at least up to 260.degree. C. An adhesion primer layer (16) is disposed between the substrate (12) and the outer coating (14). The adhesion primer layer (16) includes an inorganic binder matrix for increasing adhesion to the titanium and titanium alloys. The primer layer (16) further includes a thermoplastic resin in particulate form for increasing adhesion to the outer coating (14).

Coated article

A spray booth for applying a coating to a substrate includes an outer chamber (12) containing a fluid therein having a predetermined first temperature and/or humidity and an inner chamber (14) in fluid communication with the outer chamber (12). The inner chamber (14) contains the fluid therein at a higher predetermined second humidity and/or temperature. The inner chamber (14) includes a fan (42) for recirculating a flow of the fluid at the second predetermined temperature and/or humidity therethrough and filters (34,36,44,46) for removing airborne comtaminants. A temperature and/or humidity control device (58) exhausts a predetermined amount of the fluid from the inner chamber (14) out of the inner (14) and outer chambers (12) said exhausted fluid being essentially free of toxic contaminants, the exhaust of the fluid drawing fluid from the outer chamber (22) into the inner chamber (14) to lower the temperature and/or humidity in the inner chamber (14).
