A novel liquid crystal display (LCD) is alternately operable in an active display mode, in which its LED array is forward biased and the LEDs emit backlight, or in an inactive display mode, in which the LED array is reverse biased and the LEDs function as photo diodes that harvest the energy of ambient light to generate a photovoltaic (PV) current used to charge the battery of a device, such as a smartphone, in which the LCD is embedded. In one embodiment, the LCD is also alternately operable in a semi-active display mode, in which one or more selected segments of the LED array are forward biased, and the LEDs of the selected segments emit backlight, while one or more unselected segments are reverse biased, and the LEDs of the unselected segments generate the PV current to charge the rechargeable battery.

A protocol framework for a Secure IP Access (SIA) method, and supporting components deployed on IP hosts and IP networks. Using this method, an IP host can establish a secure data channel within an IP network over an insecure shared link while requesting IP address and networking configuration parameters from the IP network. The present invention differs from the prior art in that the present invention provides one or a network of passive or active radio frequency identification (RFID) transceivers and antenna elements in different numbers, in various network sizes, in different configurations and on various substrates. The RFID transceiver can be co-located with standard semiconductor devices, for cost-effective circuit design and non-destructive fabrication test and analysis of integrated circuits and printed circuit boards after fabrication, and to locate, track and identify the integrated circuit, printed circuit boards and products in which they are implemented. The RFID transceivers can be coupled to substrates containing matter in gas, liquid, or solid form, such as medical devices like breast implants, for effective monitoring of the substrates to ensure that the substrate is in an unaltered state and the matter is still contained securely within. The RFID transceivers can be coupled to secure tapes of various lengths and widths and mesh bags or sheets of various sizes and they can be applied at the carton-level using them to locate, track and identify the integrated circuit, printed circuit boards and products in which they are implemented and/or the cartons in which they were placed.

RFID devices for verification of correctness, reliability, functionality and security

This invention provides interference predictions, suitable for least interference dynamic channel assignment use or other frequency hopping uses by de-coupling the time slot assignment and the frequency hopping pattern assignment. In particular, a least interfered time slot is selected based on an aggregate interference measurement performed across an entire transmission band or a pre-specified range of frequencies in the transmission band. A user is assigned a least interfered time slot and provided an appropriate frequency hopping pattern.

The present invention provides a RFID device comprising a radio frequency identification (RFID) transceiver and antenna element co-located with a semiconductor device, a method for making same and a method of using the RFID device of the present invention to locate, track and identify semiconductor devices and the devices they reside in. One embodiment of the RFID device of the present invention comprises a radio frequency identification (RFID) transceiver embedded within packaging of a semiconductor device. A second embodiment of the RFID device of the present invention comprises a radio frequency identification (RFID) transceiver as a separate circuit block within the semiconductor device. A third embodiment of the RFID device of the present invention comprises a radio frequency identification (RFID) transceiver as a separate independent circuit on top of the semiconductor device, System on Chip (SoC). These RFIDs can also be nested within an enclosure, or combined to increase the address length of the RFID.

Analysis and simulation have shown good performance in the presence of noise and channel delay dispersion, impairments that are the harshest in a wireless environment. Prior techniques for OFDM synchronization have focussed on the time domain representation of the signal. Those that have recognized the translation of time and frequency offset to the frequency domain have not considered the systematic modification of the signal by the offsets.

A security system controlling access to a resource is arranged to operate such that when an attempt to access a resource using a password or PIN fails, the time interval 't' that must elapse before a subsequent attempt at access can be successful, is incremented. By making the increments increasingly large (illustratively, an exponential function of the number 'n' of unsuccessful attempts), repeated access attempts by hackers or other unauthorized users is discouraged, because they simply cannot wait the time needed to make a large number of trial and error attempts. On the other hand, valid users, while experiencing a delay prior to access, are nevertheless able to gain access, rather than being completely 'lockedout'. This approach is a better compromise between access control and denial.

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for providing increased security in a telecommunications network by using quasi-time domain reflectometry techniques to identify those telephone calls which comprise multiple legs. Echo data are collected for the telephone call from a predetermined point in the network to a point where the call originated. The data are processed to generate an indication of whether the telephone call comprises multiple legs, thus identifying those calls most susceptible to unauthorized use. The indication that a telephone call comprises multiple legs is advantageously used together with call attribute information, such as whether the call is placed to an international destination, to determine whether a given multiple-leg call is most likely a valid access to the communication system or most likely fraudulent.

Telecommunications fraud detection scheme

An authenticator card includes a liquid crystal display arranged to exhibit a dynamically changeable bar code pattern that represents an account number and, optionally, a PIN and/or expiration date. The card includes circuitry for periodically changing the bar code in accordance with a predetermined algorithm. When the card is presented by a user to a merchant to authenticate the identity of the user in connection with a business transaction, the bar code is scanned by a conventional bar code reader. The code is convened to electronic form and transmitted to a verification processor to be authenticated. During authentication, a corresponding algorithm is used to validate information from the received signal, enabling a database query to determine validity of the card. Advantageously, the card can be mass produced at low cost, and a readily available bar code scanner provides a simple interface when the card is presented for authentication.
