A process for preparing an alkoxylation catalyst suitable for alkoxylating compounds such as active hydrogen-containing compounds wherein an alkoxylated alcohol mixture, a calcium-containing compound that is at least partially dispersible in the alkoxylated alcohol mixture, and a carboxylic acid are mixed together to produce a calcium-containing composition having titratable alkalinity, the composition being obtained under conditions to prevent loss of water, the composition being at least partially neutralized with an inorganic acid under conditions to prevent loss of water to produce a partially neutralized calcium-containing catalyst.

Alkoxylation process using calcium based catalysts

A process of producing a water dispersible alumina comprising forming an aqueous alumina slurry, acidifying the slurry to a pH range of from about 5 to about 8, aging the acidified slurry at elevated temperatures and for a sufficient amount of time to convert the greater portion of the alumina to a colloidal sol, recovering the sol and drying the sol to produce a highly water dispersible alumina.

Catalyst composition useful for preparing 2,6-xylenol

Phenol is methylated over an alumina catalyst using methanol, and the reaction product therefrom is combined with additional methanol over a promoted magnesium oxide catalyst. Major reaction products are ortho-cresol, 2,6-xylenol and 2,3,6-trimethylphenol. The promoted magnesium oxide catalyst contains metal promoters selected from the group consisting of titanium, chromium, and uranium together with sulfate ions.

HCl gas is added to aluminum alkoxides containing from 1 to 5 carbon atoms (0.5 mole HCl/mole Al) and the mixture is hydrolyzed in water. Alcohol is recovered by azeotropic distillation and the product, a solution of aluminum oxychloride, is concentrated.

Aluminas derived from aluminum alkoxide hydrolysis are calcined at 1150.degree.-1800.degree. F for a period of time ranging 0.5 to about 12 hours to develop specific pore volume and pore diameter characteristics prior to use as a catalyst in the vapor phase and liquid phase methylation of phenol, monosubstituted, and di-substituted phenols. The calcining at higher temperatures gives increased catalyst life, lower isomerization and disproportionation, and higher orthomethylation activity.

Phenolics methylation using a modified alumina catalyst

This invention provides an improved process for the disproportionation of highly alkylated phenols with phenol using an improved magnesium oxide catalyst promoted with tungsten oxide, silica sol, and sodium silicate. The method provides a catalyst having a high reactivity, high surface area, and high crush strength compared to known magnesium oxide, tungsten oxide catalysts. The catalyst is useful in phenol methylation and disproportionation. The effect of silica sol and sodium silicate is synergistic since these materials alone will not catalyze these reactions. Surprisingly, the catalyst will not disproportionate olefins.
