An example electronic device includes an active digital pen sensor surface to generate analog position information, wherein the active digital pen sensor surface includes a projective capacitive sensor layer with a variance of sheet resistance of less than plus or minus 20 percent. The electronic device also includes a controller, including a sigma-delta analog-to-digital (A-to-D) converter, to generate digital pen position information based on the analog position information, and perform a triangulation based on the digital pen position information to determine a pen position.

Styli for generating alert notifications to prevent unintentional marking of interactive devices are disclosed. A disclosed stylus includes a housing and a processor. The housing is to interchangeably receive a physically marking nib and an electronic marking nib. The processor is carried by the housing. The processor is to determine a received nib is the physically marking nib. The processor is further to determine a distance between the stylus and an interactive device satisfies a threshold. The processor is further to generate an alert notification based on the received nib being the physically marking nib and the distance between the stylus and the interactive device satisfying the threshold.

An apparatus includes a display stack comprising at least one layer to generate a digital display image. A front stack includes a position encoded contrast layer to provide a pattern of light in response to non-visible light applied to the position encoded contrast layer. The pattern of light encodes spatial information across a surface of the position encoded contrast layer. A hot mirror reflects the non-visible light applied to the position encoded contrast layer of the front stack and is optically transparent to visible light generated from the display stack.

A system architecture for managing a group of heterogeneous workstations that may be widely dispersed geographically. A system according to the present teachings enables users to access remote workstations and run applications on the remote workstations transparently and enables seamless integration of remote desktop sharing and distributing desktops among heterogeneous workstations. The system also provides enforcement of protections among user and workstations, user account management and workstation allocation management. The present architecture is platform independent and enables workstations to be accessed from anywhere using a graphical user interface through the Internet.

A system and method for virtual device access in a graphics computer is disclosed. The present invention enables applications running on a graphics computer to access the graphics hardware device with no per-transaction performance cost. Each time an application attempts to access the graphics hardware device, a hardware control manager either gives the application access to the graphics hardware device if no other application is currently accessing the hardware, or alternatively, if another application is currently accessing hardware, the hardware control manager instructs a signal handler associated with the application attempting access to perform a graphics context switch with the currently accessing application before the hardware control manager will give permission to the application attempting access to access the graphics hardware device. An important feature of the present invention is that the device dependent features are provided by user level code via the signal handler whereas the hardware control manager supports only device independent features. Another important feature of the present invention is the ability to automatically control data flow without incurring additional overhead.

System and method for virtual device access in a computer system

In a software library which is made up of a series of modules, both generic modules, and substitute modules are provided. While there need not be a substitute for each of the generic modules, when a substitute module is provided, it is optimized for a particular processor or architecture with which the library is expected to be used. Accordingly, when the processor or architecture is identified when the library is first initialized, the generic modules are replaced by the optimized modules, if any, which are available for use with the identified processor or architecture.
