An RFID tag and a method of its use are disclosed. One such RFID tag includes first, second, and third RFID inlays included on a tag housing, the first, second, and third RFID inlays each corresponding to a different rate identifier. The tag also includes a panel engaged with the housing and movable among first, second and third positions. The panel includes RFID shorting structures each positioned to electrically contact one of the first, second, and third RFID inlays such that, in any of the first, second, and third positions, only one of the first, second, and third RFID inlays remains active.

In some implementations, a method for wirelessly communicating includes receiving, from a transceiver, a message associated with a value for a dynamic attribute of the vehicle. The message associated with the value for the dynamic attribute is wirelessly transmitted by a converter to a wireless device. The converter is connected to the transceiver and an on-board vehicle processor.

In some implementations, a method for wirelessly communicating with the processor of a vehicle includes receiving, from a status module in a vehicle, a value for a dynamic attribute of the vehicle. The value for the dynamic attribute is wirelessly transmitted, from the vehicle, to a Radio Frequency (RF) reader.

A vehicle tracking system and method of tracking vehicles in multiple traffic lanes is disclosed. One system includes an RFID reader including a plurality of antenna ports. The system also includes a first antenna connected to a first antenna port of the plurality of antenna ports, the first antenna oriented toward a first lane of traffic. The system further includes a second antenna connected to the first antenna port and oriented toward a second lane of traffic. The system also includes a third antenna connected to a second antenna port of the plurality of antenna ports, the third antenna oriented toward the first lane of traffic. In some cases, the RFID reader is configured to detect the existence of a vehicle in a lane based on detection of an RFID device associated with the vehicle at two or more of the plurality of antenna ports.

The present disclosure is directed switching RFID tags. In some implementations, the RFID system includes an RFID tag and a panel. The panel includes one or more contacts configured to move between a first position and a second position. The second position forms an electrical connection between the RFID tag and the one or more contacts to update a state of the RFID tag.

Switching radio frequency identification (RFID) tags

The present disclosure includes a system and method for conducting radio frequency signals using multiple layers. In some implementations, a signal transfer element configured to passively transfer RF signals between a first region and a second region includes a first conductor layer having a first continuous conductor configured as a first portion of a first antenna, a transmission line, and a first portion of a second antenna. The first antenna and the second antenna are configured to wirelessly receive and transmit Radio Frequency (RF) signals. The signal transfer element also includes a second conductor layer having a second continuous conductor configured as a second portion of the first antenna, a ground plane, and a second portion of the second antenna. The first conductor layer and the second conductor layer are spatially proximate such that the transmission line and the ground plane are configured to passively transfer RF signals between the first antenna and the second antenna independent of an electrical connection between the first conductor layer and the second conductor layer.

Conducting radio frequency signals using multiple layers

The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for backscattering different radio frequency protocols. In some implementations, a radio Frequency (RF) tag includes an antenna and a storage module. The antenna is configured to receive an RF signal from any of a plurality of readers. Each reader is associated with a different protocol having different time durations. The storage module is coupled to the antenna and configured to store energy associated with the RF signal. In addition, the storage module substantially maintains a voltage in the tag during any of the different time durations independent of an internal power supply.

Backscattering different radio frequency protocols

The present disclosure includes systems and techniques relating to fluid level detection. In general, in some implementations, a fluid level detector includes a radio frequency transmitter, and a plurality of radio frequency detectors arranged to receive radio frequency signals from the radio frequency transmitter when above a fluid level. The radio frequency transmitter and one or more multiple transmitting antennas can be configured to transmit ultra high frequency (UHF) RF signals. The radio frequency detectors can be radio frequency antennas, and the fluid level detector can include circuitry configured to receive signals from the radio frequency antennas. For example, the circuitry can include a decode array (e.g., a two dimensional diode array) coupled with the antennas, and a decoder (e.g., digital logic) coupled with the decode array.

Systems and techniques to assemble RFID tag can be employed in a manufacturing endeavor. An RFID tag assembling system includes an RFID module conveyor that moves a first substrate having multiple RFID modules, an RFID antenna conveyor that moves a second substrate having multiple RFID antennas with respect to and into alignment with the first substrate, and a joiner in proximity to the first substrate to separate the RFID modules from the first substrate and attach the RFID modules to the RFID antennas on the second substrate. The substrates can be reel-form substrates, and RFID tags can be formed in parallel. The system can also include an RFID module tester, and the RFID modules can be tested in parallel.

These systems and techniques relating to RFID tags include current source control in RFID memory. According to an aspect, a radio frequency identification tag includes an antenna, a radio frequency interface coupled with the antenna, and a non-volatile memory including multiple memory cells, at least one of the memory cells including a floating gate, a control gate, and a dielectric there between. The non-volatile memory includes a controlled current source operable to modify the at least one memory cell. Additionally, the non-volatile memory can include a voltage supply line regulator that limits voltage supply based on a sensed operational current that results from the controlled current source in the non-volatile memory.

Systems and techniques to provide radio frequency identification tags including a non-responsive state, which is independent of supplied power, initiated in conjunction with a tag communications reset. In general, in one implementation, a passive radio frequency identification tag includes an antenna, a radio frequency interface coupled with the antenna, and control logic that initiates a deep sleep state in response an event, the deep sleep state including a non-responsive state that is independent of supplied power, and the control logic providing a following state entered upon conclusion of the non-responsive state, where communications initiate from the following state.

Deep sleep in an RFID tag

An RFID sensor system and method is disclosed. An RFID sensor system includes a conducting path having first and second conductors, and one or more RFID sensing transceivers spatially-distributed along the conducting path and capactively-coupled to the first and second conductors. The system further includes a controller that provides an AC signal on the conducting path, and receives signals from the one or more RFID sensing transceivers. The conducting path and RFID sensing transceivers can formed in a flexible substrate and mated together.

Distributed RF coupled system

A design and method for attaching an RFID chip to a conductive pattern is disclosed. According to the invention, multiple die are aligned with respective multiple conductive modules for structural and electrical attachment. As disclosed, the multiple die can be attached near simultaneously and without the need for intermediate handling. Therefore, substantial cost benefits are realized. Also disclosed is a method of making electrical connections employing the use of a laser. A photosensitive adhesive material is used to structurally secure the attachment.

Chip attachment in an RFID tag

The invention reduces recovery time in a receiving coil or antenna of an RFID reader by generating a reference voltage that then clamps the node on which the desired signal is monitored. The coil is coupled to parallel channels. One channel has a recovery time or capacitance very much less than the other parallel channel. The two channels have a monitored node which are clamped together or at least close together by means of a Schottky diode. The monitored nodes of both channels are coupled to the inputs of a differential amplifier. The output of the amplifier is the conditioned received signal from the coil used in the reader as the sensed signals from the RFID tags.
