Devices and methods for rapid chilling of products, articles and devices, including both perishable and non-perishable goods are provided. These devices and methods store thermal energy by ice and/or slush formation and employ the heat of the product to be chilled to help harvest the ice. Devices provided by this invention have a chill tank containing a freezable chilling agent; a source of refrigerant; and one or more thermally-conductive layers in the tank which are in contact with the freezable chilling agent and which have a working surface thermally coupled with the refrigerant source and a heat-absorbing surface thermally coupled with the working surface, wherein selective introduction of a flow of refrigerant closely thermally coupled with the working surface chills the working surface, the chilling agent in the tank and any product in the tank and permits chilling agent to freeze on the working surface and wherein the refrigerant source, the working surface and the heat-absorbing surface are arranged with respect to each other and the refrigerant is selectively applied so that chilling agent does not freeze to the heat-absorbing surface.

Device and process for chilling goods

A method is shown for measuring naturally occurring pores in a specimen material. A positron is emitted from a radioactive source and enters a material to pick up an electron to form positronium. The positronium decays very rapidly into two gamma rays. The lifetime of the positronium depends on the size of the pore it is trapped within. The larger the pore, the longer the positronium will last. By measuring the decay rate of positrons over an extended time scale in the range from 30 to 500 nsec., a near relation can be developed between positronium lifetime and pore diameter.

The present invention discloses a lamp for providing general and task illumination in a simple cost efficient manner. This is provided by the structure where one lamp designed to provide general illumination of a large area or room is movably connected to a pivotably positionable second lamp which provides directed illlumination in a limited area. The lamp for providing general illumination is fixed on an upwardly extending rod so that light from the lamp is directed upward. This structure allows for general room illumination and directed task illumination to be provided for in a single unit.

A control apparatus is described which can be incorporated into conventional intermittent positive breathing gas pressure lung treatment systems to provide for holding the gas in the lungs for a brief period of time after inspiration and before expiration. The control apparatus in the system delays the opening of a gas pressure release opening exhaust valve associated with the patient breathing portion of the system. The apparatus enables such systems to more closely simulate normal breathing and to increase the time during which vaporized medication supplied in the breathing gas can be absorbed in the lungs.
