A method () of orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) communication via a plurality of subchannels () within a noncontiguous wideband channel () is provided. The method () determines an SNR for each of the subchannels (). The method () then designates a subchannel () as clear () when its SNR is greater than a least-SNR threshold (), as impeded () when its SNR is less than the least-SNR threshold and greater than an SNR-evaluation threshold, and as obstructed () when its SNR is less than both the least-SNR and the SNR-evaluation thresholds. The method () then transmits OFDM data () so that each of the clear subchannels receives the OFDM data () at a maximum subchannel signal level (), each of the impeded subchannels receives the OFDM data () at an intermediate subchannel signal level (), and each of the obstructed subchannels receives the OFDM data () at zero subchannel signal level ().

Method of multiple-carrier communication within a noncontiguous wideband spectrum and apparatus therefor

A new modulation/demodulation method and apparatus are described for use with RF communication. A transmitter (T) modulates information onto a plurality of carrier signals transmitted simultaneously over a corresponding plurality of frequencies using cepstral modulation. A receiver (R) receives the plurality of carrier signals and demodulates the signals utilizing cepstral demodulation. Receiver (R) monitors the carrier signals and in response to predetermined conditions selects a cepstral constellation to be utilized. Receiver (R) provides the cepstral constellation information to a transmitter (T) that, in turn, transmits the cepstral constellation information to a receiver (R), in turn, provides the cepstral constellation information to transmitter (T). Transmitter (T) utilizes the selected cepstral constellation information to modulate the next transmission of the plurality of carrier signals.

Radio communication system and method of operation

A wireless network () includes a number of definable radio systems () in communication with one another via a wideband backbone (). Each of the systems () includes a first software programmable transceiver () for extra-network communication using a narrowband channel defined by a radio frequency capability (). Each of the radios () further includes a second transceiver for intra-network communication using wideband backbone (). Methods for operating the network () enable the radios () to engage in communication over narrowband channels to carry a signal between multiple radios () and an extra-network location, and for communicating the signal as distinct bitstreams between the radios () and another of the radios () using the wideband backbone (). In addition, methods enable the radios () to monitor multiple external networks concurrently by having each of the radios () use a different RF capability (), and to combine their independently received signals to improve performance and suppress interference.

Definable radio and method of operating a wireless network of same

Apparatus are provided for a communication signal processing apparatus having a channel estimator configured to generate a first channel estimation at a first time point, a linear predictor coupled to the channel estimator, and an adaptive filter coupled with the linear predictor. The linear predictor is configured to predict a second channel estimation based on a second time point and a channel frequency. The second time point is concurrent or subsequent to the first time point. The second channel estimation includes a first coefficient. The linear predictor includes a first predictor having a sample time point. The first predictor is configured to generate the first coefficient of the second channel estimation based on the sample time point and the second time point. The sample time point is prior to the second time point. The adaptive filter is configured to recursively determine the second channel estimation.

Communication channel tracking apparatus

A programmable modem () for processing a waveform includes a general purpose processor (GPP) engine () and special purpose programmable signal processing engines () in communication with the GPP engine (). A coder () may use a dual allocation process () to iteratively combine a rate-allocation process () with a QoS-region-allocation process () to specify codebooks () for use by a codebook quantizer ().

An analog-to-digital converter ('ADC') architecture as described herein utilizes a digital signal processor having suitably configured waveform prediction logic that can predict expected types of input signals. The ADC architecture subtracts the predictable signal components from the analog input signal prior to the analog-to-digital conversion, which extends the dynamic range of the ADC employed by the ADC architecture. In practice, the ADC architecture can subtract predictable strong signal components from an analog input signal such that the ADC can apply its available dynamic range to the remaining weak signal components.

High dynamic range analog to digital converter architecture

In a digital channel of a digital wireless communication system including at least one mobile station, at least one base transceiver station in communication with the mobile station, a transcoder configured to provide a signal conversion between vocoder frames and pulse code modulation, and a mobile switching center for interconnecting the digital wireless communication system to a public switched telephone network, a method and apparatus for determining a fault in the digital channel is disclosed. The method includes generating a first set of vocoder input parameters from a speech input signal, and generating a second set of vocoder input parameters from an output signal substantially equivalent to the speech input signal as it is received at a mobile station via the digital channel. The method further includes calculating a metric based on the first and the second set of vocoder input parameters, and subsequently determining a fault in the digital channel using the metric.

Method and apparatus for testing digital channels in a wireless communication system

Adaptive rate system and method for network communications

System efficiently communicates a perceptually encoded speech spectrum signal from a transmitter to a receiver. The transmitter includes a speech analyzer which accepts a speech signal input and generates a parameterized speech signal. The transmitter also includes a vector quantizer for generating the perceptually encoded speech spectrum signal from the parameterized speech signal. The receiver decodes the perceptually encoded speech spectrum signal to produce decoded spectral parameters to further produce a synthetic speech output. The vector quantizer performs a method for partitioning a vector quantizer (VQ) codebook to produce perceptually organized sub-codebooks. The vector quantizer performs a second method for quantizing a vector based on the perceptually organized sub-codebooks. The second method identifies a vector, from one of the perceptually organized sub-codebooks, to perceptually model the speech signal input.

System and method for communicating a perceptually encoded speech spectrum signal

Classifiers (110) and a comparator (112) perform an identification method (400) to identify a class as one of a predetermined set of classes. The identification method is based on determining the observation costs associated with the unidentified class. The identification method includes combining models representing the predetermined set of classes and the unidentified vectors representing the class. The predetermined class associated with the largest observation cost is identified as the class. Additionally, a unique, low-complexity training method (300) includes creating the models which represent the predetermined set of classes.
