Systems and methods are provided for selecting and fragmenting a first precursor ion in an MS3 experiment. One or more first excitation parameters are calculated that define a first dipole excitation using a processor. The first dipole excitation is used to select a first precursor ion and fragment the first precursor ion to produce a second precursor ion. The first dipole excitation is applied to the continuous beam of ions by sending a first set of data including the first excitation parameters to a mass spectrometer. The first set of data is sent so that a first quadrupole applies the first dipole excitation to a continuous beam of ions. The mass spectrometer includes an ion source that provides the continuous beam of ions and the first quadrupole that receives the continuous beam of ions and is adapted to apply dipole excitation to the continuous beam of ions.

Mass spectrometers and related methods of making and using the same are disclosed herein that generally involve positioning a blocking or masking element in the path of an ion beam passing through the mass spectrometer so as to selectively block at least a portion of the ions in the ion beam from entering an accelerator. Mass spectrometers and related methods are also disclosed in which an ion beam passing through the mass spectrometer is deflected or otherwise aimed so as to approach a TOF axis of an accelerator at a non-zero angle.

High resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer

In some embodiments, a gas diffuser for use in a mass spectrometer is disclosed that can provide a controlled expansion of an ion-containing gas so as to reduce gas velocity for entry into subsequent stages of the mass spectrometer, e.g., a mass analyzer. In some embodiments, the controlled expansion of the gas is provided by flowing the gas through a channel whose cross-sectional area change, e.g. progressively increases, in the direction of the gas flow so as to provide controlled expansion of the gas.

Gas diffuser ion inlet

A system of mass spectrometry is disclosed having an ion source for generating ions at substantially atmospheric pressure. The system has a sampling member with an orifice disposed therein. The sampling member forms a vacuum chamber with a mass spectrometer. The system also has a curtain plate between the ion source and the sampling member. The curtain plate has an aperture therein, having a cross-section and being spaced from the sampling member to define a flow passage between the curtain plate and the sampling member, and to define an annular gap between the orifice and the aperture. The area of the annular gap is less than the cross-sectional area of the aperture. The system also has a power supply for applying a voltage to the curtain plate, and a curtain gas flow mechanism for directing a curtain gas into the flow passage and the annular gap.

System and method for applying curtain gas flow in a mass spectrometer

A system and method for performing MS/MS of everything are provided. Ionisable materials separated in order of molecular weight in a plurality of mass ranges are received at a mass spectrometer system in a given order in time, each mass range comprising a respective center mass value and a respective width. The ionisable materials are ionised in the given order that each of the plurality of mass ranges are received, to form respective precursor ions in a respective given mass range. The respective precursor ions are filtered via a mass filter module, a mass scan range of the mass filter module synchronized with the given order in which each of the plurality of mass ranges are received. The respective precursor ions are fragmented, via a fragmentation module, to form respective product ions. The respective product ions are analyzed in a mass spectrometer module to produce product ion spectra.

Method for high efficiency tandem mass spectrometry

Various embodiments are described herein for an apparatus that can be used to interface a Differential Mobility Analyzer (DMA) with a Mass Spectrometer (MS). The apparatus includes first and second plates with first and second apertures respectively, and an interface region in between the first and second plates. During use, the first aperture receives mobility separated ions from the DMA, the interface region receives a gas flow to prevent gas outflow from the DMA toward the MS, and the first and second plates are configured to receive voltages to generate an electric field there between to guide the mobility separated ions from the first aperture to the second aperture, which then provides the mobility separated ions to the MS.

Interface between differential mobility analyzer and mass spectrometer

A mass spectrometer and method for performing high resolution mass spectrometry are provided, the mass spectrometer comprising an electrostatic trap and mass analyzer. The electrostatic trap comprises entrance and exit ends, entrance and exit end ion mirrors, a central field-free region, and a longitudinal axis. The mass analyzer receives ions from the exit end. Ions are admitted into the electrostatic trap via the entrance end, trapping ions in the electrostatic trap, the ions oscillating between the entrance and exit end ion mirrors along the axis. The electrostatic trap waits for the ions to separate into bunches different m/z values via the oscillating, and then excites a given bunch of ions of a given m/z value along the axis until at least a portion of the given bunch overcomes a barrier field at the exit end ion mirror, exiting the electrostatic trap for analysis, leaving behind remaining ions.

Mass selector

Quantitation is performed using data from a mass spectrometer. A calibration ion mass spectrum is acquired for each of a plurality of known quantities of a material. From the calibration spectra a plurality of ions that identify the material is determined, and for each ion of the plurality of ions a linear range and linear function are determined. A sample ion mass spectrum is acquired for an unknown quantity of the material. A sample intensity is measured for each ion of the plurality of ions from the sample spectrum. After acquiring the sample spectrum, one or more ions are selected from the plurality of ions such that the sample intensity of each of the one or more ions is within a linear range of the ion. The unknown quantity is calculated from the sample intensities and linear functions of the one or more ions.

Method of quantitation by mass spectrometry

Selectivity of a measurement from a mass spectrometer is improved by selecting an extracted ion current window for the measurement after data acquisition. A plurality of mass spectra are acquired over a period of time. A first extracted ion current window is selected and from the plurality of mass spectra a first intensity as a function of time is calculated for an ion using the first extracted ion current window. A second extracted ion current window is selected and from the plurality of mass spectra a second intensity as a function of time is calculated for the ion using the second extracted ion current window. A first signal-to-noise ratio of the first intensity is compared with a second signal-to-noise ratio of the second intensity. If the second signal-to-noise ratio is greater than the first signal-to-noise ratio, the second intensity as a function of time is used for the measurement.

Method of improving signal-to-noise for quantitation by mass spectrometry

An apparatus and method of analyzing ions is described in which a Differential Mobility Analyzer (DMA) is combined with an analysis device. The DMS can be operated in first and second modes of operation to produce a plurality of ions that are sampled and analyzed by the analysis device. In the first mode of operation the DMA is configured to enable ion mobility separation and the analysis device samples and analyzes ions having ion mobility in a certain range of ion mobility and in the second mode of operation the DMA is configured to disable ion mobility separation and the analysis device samples and analyzes ions without discrimination based on ion mobility.

Apparatus and method for operating a differential mobility analyzer with a mass spectrometer

A method of analyzing ions is provided having a first ion guide with first and second ends and introducing a first group of ions and a second group of ions of opposite polarity into the first ion guide, and applying an RF voltage potential to the first ion guide for confining the first and second groups of ions radially within the first ion guide. A first trapping barrier is provided to the first end of the first ion guide for trapping the first group of ions within the first ion guide and a second trapping barrier is provided to the second end of the first ion guide for trapping the second group of ions within the first ion guide and an axial field is provided for pushing the first group of ions toward the first trapping barrier and pushing the second group of ions toward the second trapping barrier.

Method for storing and reacting ions in a mass spectrometer

A method of operating a mass spectrometer having a rod set is provided. The rod set has a first end, a second end opposite to the first end, and a longitudinal axis extending between the first end and the second end. The method comprises a) admitting ions into the rod set; b) trapping at least some of the ions in the rod set by i) producing a first barrier field at a first end member adjacent to the first end of the rod set, ii) producing a second barrier field at a second end member adjacent to the second end of the rod set, and iii) providing an aggregate field comprising an RF field between the rods of the rod set; c) selecting a first selected mass to charge ratio of a first group of ions in the ions; d) determining a first excitement level of a selected characteristic of the aggregate field for the first group of ions; e) adjusting the selected characteristic of the aggregate field to the first excitement level to resonantly excite the first group of ions to mass selectively eject the first group of ions from the rod set past the barrier field; and, f) maintaining the selected characteristic of the aggregate field at the first excitement level during an excitement time interval wherein the excitation time interval is at least 1 millisecond.

Method of operating a mass spectrometer to provide resonant excitation ion transfer

A multi-device interface for use in mass spectrometry for interfacing one or more ion sources to one or more downstream devices. The multi-device interface comprises three or more multipole rod sets configured as either an input rod set or an output rod set depending on potentials applied to the multipole rod sets. The multipole rod sets configured as an input rod set are connectable to the one or more ion sources for receiving generated ions therefrom and sending the ions to at least one multipole rod set configured as an output multipole rod set. The output multipole rod sets are connectable to a downstream device for sending the generated ions thereto. At least two of the multipole rod sets are configured as input rod sets or at least two of the multipole rod sets are configured as output rod sets.

Mass spectrometer multiple device interface for parallel configuration of multiple devices

In a mass spectrometer, ions from an ion source pass through an inlet aperture into a vacuum chamber for transmitting prior to mass analysis by the mass analyzer. The configuration of the inlet aperture forms a sonic orifice or sonic nozzle and with a predetermined vacuum chamber pressure, a supersonic free jet expansion is created in the vacuum chamber that entrains the ions within the barrel shock and Mach disc. Once formed, at least one ion guide with a predetermined cross-section to essentially radially confine the supersonic free jet expansion can focus the ions for transmission through the vacuum chamber. This effectively improves the ion transmission between the ion source and the mass analyzer.
