Improved gas sample preprocessing is provided for scanning optical spectroscopic analysis instruments by tailoring characteristic gas handling times to the scan time Tof the analysis instrument. In particular, for sample preconcentration, the desorption duration Tof the sample preconcentrator should be ≥2T. For gas chromatography, the elution duration Tof relevant eluted species should be ≥2T. This advantageously avoids having significant changes in the gas sample within the analysis instrument as a scan is being performed.

In cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS), scattering into the backward mode of a traveling wave ring-down cavity can degrade conventional CRDS performance. We have found that this performance degradation can be alleviated by measuring the backward mode signal emitted from the ring-down cavity, and using this signal to improve the processing for extracting ring-down times from the measured data. For example, fitting an exponential to the sum of the intensities of the forward and backward signals often provides substantially better results for the ring-down time than fitting an exponential to the forward signal alone. Other possibilities include extracting cavity eigenmode signals from the forward and backward signals and performing separate exponential fits to the eigenmode signals.

Preparation methods for introducing liquid samples to gas analysis instruments include 1) complete evaporation of a liquid sample in a sample chamber, and 2) allowing the sample vapor in the sample chamber to equilibrate for a predetermined time. An inert carrier gas (e.g., dry nitrogen or zero air) is also admitted to the sample chamber. After equilibration, the sample vapor is admitted as a conditioned sample to an analysis instrument. Preferably, the predetermined equilibration time is sufficiently long that the sample vapor in the sample chamber becomes substantially homogeneous with respect to both concentration and isotopic ratio. Vapor derived from a liquid calibration standard in this manner can be employed as an accurate gas-phase calibration reference.

Improved optical alignment precision to a passive optical cavity is provided by including a combination of a weak focusing element and a translation plate in the input coupling optics. Adjustment of positions and angles of these optical elements, preferably after all other input optical elements are fixed in place, advantageously provides for high-precision optical alignment to the cavity, without requiring excessively tight fabrication tolerances. Fabrication tolerances are relaxed by making the optical power of the weak focusing element significantly less than the optical power of a strong focusing element in the input optics. The position and angles of the beam with respect to the cavity can be adjusted, as can the size of the beam at the cavity. Differential adjustment of the beam size in two orthogonal directions (e.g., tangential plane and sagittal plane) at the cavity can also be provided.

Improved ease of mode matching to a passive optical cavity is provided by selecting a cavity design that has a predetermined deviation from a reference cavity design having high transverse mode degeneracy. This predetermined deviation tends to be small, so that the first overlap of high-order transverse modes with the lowest order transverse mode in frequency occurs at relatively high transverse mode numbers. Coupling to high-order transverse modes is thereby reduced, since high-order transverse modes having relatively high transverse mode numbers tend to be more difficult to couple to, and tend to have high loss. During assembly of such a cavity, it can be useful to apply a perturbation to the cavity to further optimize mode matching. For example, the length of an enclosed cavity can be adjusted by altering the number and/or length of spacers in the cavity housing.

A phasor can be employed within the resonator of an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) to adjust the absolute and relative phase of OPO beams. An embodiment of the invention comprises an OPO having at least one phasor for receiving and adjusting the phase of one or more beams resonating within the optical cavity which forms part of the OPO. Smooth alteration of the phases of the OPO beams using the at least one phasor facilitates continuous tuning of the wavelength of at least one of the beams. In another embodiment, the at least one phasor may be a translatable wedge or have adjustable refractive index to alter the phases of the OPO beams. In an additional embodiment, each at least one phasor may be comprised of more than one material, held fixedly together.

Improved multipass second harmonic generation (SHG) is provided by the use of an inverting, self-imaging telescope which ensures parallelism of all passes of all beams within the nonlinear medium. Improved multipass SHG is also provided by the use of a wedged phasor which provides a simple adjustment of the relative phase of the pump beam and second harmonic beam between passes. Improved multipass SHG is provided by the use of an inverting self-imaging telescope in combination with a wedged phasor which provides a simple adjustment of the relative phase of the pump beam and second harmonic beam between passes, ensures parallelism of all passes of all beams within the nonlinear medium. A further embodiment includes an OPO and at least one phasor and preferably first and second telescope assemblies.

According to an embodiment of the invention, improved multipass second harmonic generation (SHG) is provided by the use of an inverting, self-imaging telescope. This embodiment ensures parallelism of all passes of all beams within the nonlinear medium. According to another embodiment of the invention, improved multipass SHG is provided by the use of a wedged phasor. This arrangement provides a simple adjustment of the relative phase of the pump beam and second harmonic beam between passes. According to a further embodiment of the invention, improved multipass SHG is provided by the use of an inverting self-imaging telescope in combination with a wedged phasor. This arrangement also allows corresponding passes of the pump beam and second harmonic beam to be made collinear within the nonlinear medium by design.

Multipass second harmonic generation

A tunable laser and laser tuning method, based on the interaction of a spectrally dependent beam distortion and a spatial filter within a laser cavity. One embodiment of this laser is an external cavity semiconductor laser in which broad tunability is obtained by the insertion of an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) into the laser cavity such that the intra-cavity laser beam passes through the AOTF in zeroth order.

Laser tuning by spectrally dependent spatial filtering

A laser tuning mechanism which embodies 'spectrally dependent spatial filtering' (SDSF) and contemplates two key elements of the tuning mechanism. The first element of the SDSF tuning mechanism is a spectrally dependent beam distortion (i.e. alteration of the amplitude and/or phase profile of the beam) provided by an SDSF tuning element in a laser cavity. The second element of the SDSF tuning mechanism is an intracavity spatial filter which makes the round trip cavity loss a sensitive function of both beam distortion and cavity alignment. Such a laser can be aligned so that a specific beam distortion, which is provided by the SDSF tuning element at a tunable wavelength, is required to obtain minimum round trip cavity loss, thereby providing tunable laser emission. A preferred embodiment of the SDSF tuning mechanism is an external cavity semiconductor laser having a zeroth order acousto-optic tuning element.

Laser Tuning by spectrally dependent spatial filtering

An optical fiber transmitter for emitting an information-carrying laser beam comprises an optically or electrically pumped single mode MQW (multi-quantum well) semiconductor amplifying mirror as a gain medium and a separate external reflector to form a cavity. The external cavity length defines a comb of optical modes, all or a subset of which correspond to channel wavelengths of an optical telecommunications system having plural optical channels. The semiconductor gain element has a homogeneously broadened gain region; a tuning arrangement tunes the laser from mode to mode across the gain region, thereby selecting each one of the plural optical channels. When the maximum gain bandwidth is less than mode-to-mode spacing defined by the cavity, the tuning arrangement includes a means of altering the temperature of the amplifying mirror, thereby translating the frequency of the gain peak from one mode to another. An optical modulator adds modulation to provide an information-carrying laser beam, and a coupler couples the information-carrying laser beam into an optical fiber of the optical telecommunications system. A calibration method based on detecting inter-mode optical transitions (mode hopping) is described. The parameters of the amplifying mirror and tuning arrangement can be adjusted during operation to switch quickly from one cavity mode to another in stepwise fashion.

Achromatic phase-matching (APM) is used for efficiently multiplying the frequency of broad bandwidth light by using a nonlinear optical medium comprising a second-harmonic generation (SHG) crystal and stationary optical elements whose configuration, properties, and arrangement have been optimized to match the angular dispersion characteristics of the SHG crystal to at least the third order. These elements include prisms and diffraction gratings for directing an input light beam onto the SHG crystal such that each ray wavelength is aligned to match the phase-matching angle for the crystal at each wavelength of light to at least the third order and such that every ray wavelength overlap within the crystal.
