Web pages retrieved by a browser core are translated into user interface component definitions and page information. The definitions and page information are transmitted to a user device which recomposes the definitions and page information into a format for presentation to a user on a user device. Transmitting the definitions and page information includes translation of the definitions and page information into a format appropriate for both the particular communications media on which the information is transmitted, and the device to which the information is transmitted. The device includes a browser client which performs the recomposition. The browser client also receives user input, and may respond by altering the information locally at the user device, and sending information related to the user selection back to the browser core for further processing. The browser core also tracks user sessions, thus allowing a user to access the network from several devices, and capture session information for each access from each device. This allows users to switch devices, and start a new session at the point where a previous session ended.

Methods and apparatus for integrating services for accessing the world wide web

A computer interface allows as user to control aspects of its behavior by head motion. In one example, a head mounted display (HMD) includes a directional detector for generating an object detection signal when pointed at certain physical objects. The detector is mounted so users can point it by moving their heads. In another example, a graphical user interface includes the computation of a view space comprised of multiple separate portions, in each of which graphical user interface windows generated by separate computer processes can be selectively located by a user. The user can selectively move such windows between view space portions by a point and click interface. The method displays a subset of view space portions to the user at one time, senses motion of the user's head, and changes the portions of the view space displayed, in discrete units of view space portions, in response to changes in the position of the user's head. In still another example, a graphical user interface includes: computing a visual space; displaying a subset of space to the user, sensing user motion, including monitoring motion of a user's head, so as to divide head motions into at least a first and second class; and allowing a user to navigate through the visual space in response to head motions of said first class, while substantially ignoring head motions of the second class for such purposes.

A computer system provides an improved graphical user interface by defining a view space in which graphical user interface windows from separate computer processes can be selectively located by a user. This view space has a plurality of discrete portions each large enough to hold a plurality of such user interface windows. The system enables users to selectively associate view space portions with physical locations external to the system's computing apparatus. The system also enables users to selectively locate a variable number of the user interface windows in each of the view space portions associated with such a physical location, including enabling the user to selectively move windows between such view space portions. The system detects when a user motions toward a given physical locations and responds to such a detection by presenting a visual display showing the given view space portion associated with the given physical location, together with any user interface window located in the given view space portion. In some versions of the invention, the physical location can be defined by a global positioning system and the system can detect when a user moves into a location defined by such global positioning.

Graphical user interface

A computer video display system and method is disclosed. The computer video display system includes a frame buffer for storing a multiplicity of view points of a model to be displayed, a measurement device for measuring an aspect of the user's movement, a view point device for ascertaining a point of view of the model to be displayed in response to the measurement device, a computational device for modifying the view point according to a predefined algorithm, an access device for accessing the appropriate display information from the frame buffer, and a head mounted display for displaying the selected view point of the model. During operation, the measuring device, the view point device, and the computational device continuously update the view points of the model in response to movements of the user. In response thereto, the access device traverses the frame buffer and provides the updated display information to the head mounted display. The image, as seen through the head mounted display, appears to be continuous, fluid and natural.

System and method for a virtual reality system having a frame buffer that stores a plurality of view points that can be selected and viewed by the user

A system and method associate each of a plurality of computer applications with a corresponding physical location external to the computer and display a given one of the applications when the user focuses attention on the physical location associated with that application. Preferably the display as a view window in a graphical user interface, and the user has means for moving that window relative to the given application. The computer can be a portable and display device can be head mounted. Preferably an input device enables the user to interact with the given application, and preferably the physical locations bring to mind their associated applications. In some embodiments, an identifier, such as a bar code or a coded transmitter, is placed near each of the physical locations to help detect when the user focuses attention on that particular location. The invention also provides a head mounted unit which projects a visual image to the user wearing it. The unit also includes an object detector for generating a signal when pointed at certain objects. The object detector is mounted so a user wearing the unit can point the detector by moving his or her head. Preferably the unit includes a see through window so the user can see his or her physical surroundings. The invention also provides for a computer which includes a display, a device for generating a display object on the display, such as a cursor, and a motion sensor for causing the display object to move within the display in response to motion of the display.
