A medical monitoring device, operating system, and method is provided for managing administration of medical treatment regimens for treating a patient's medical conditions. The device stores medication schedule data, treatment data, patient query data, and patient response data. The device includes a controller for controlling modes of operation of the device, controlling access of the memory, controlling display of the treatment data and the patient query data on a display, receiving and processing patient response data, tracking timing, and providing scheduled medication alarm signals. The device provides scheduled medication alarm signals that alert the user concerning prescribed medications due to be taken. The device further includes removable trays of varying capacities that provide flexibility regarding type and quantity of dispersed medications. The device also facilitates a pre-loading and pre-labeling method that provides for efficiency, accuracy, and improved controls regarding dispensing of prescribed medications.

The device further includes dedicated keys interfaced with the controller. Each dedicated key is associated with one of the medical treatment regimens, and initiates the display of treatment messages relating to the associated medical treatment regimen. Successive actuation of each dedicated key initiates the display of further treatment messages relating to the associated medical treatment regimen. The device further includes soft function keys interfaced with the controller. The soft function keys signal the controller, commanding it to execute different modes of operation of the medical monitoring device. The device provides scheduled medication alarm signals that alert the user concerning prescribed medications due to be taken.

A device for monitoring medication of a patient and for prompting the patient into certain medication taking schedule and/or certain programming steps and routines. The device has a plurality of compartments, each of which may store medication, and an electrical signaling system to emit medication alert signals from time-to-time, each of which said signals indicates (a) that medication should be taken, (b) from which compartment the medication should be taken, (c) and the quantity of medication to be taken. If a designated compartment is not opened and closed within a predetermined period of time, the electrical signaling system will display an alarm and the event will be recorded as a missed medication event, unless the patient then opens the designated compartment. If each designated compartment is opened and closed, the take-medication signal and the alarm (if operating) are turned off and the event is recorded for later review. The device may be constructed in one piece with hinged doors for each pill compartment, or each pill compartment may be a separate 'drawer' sliding into a main unit.

Electronic medication monitoring and dispensing method

The present invention monitors the disease process and health of a patient undergoing drug treatment. A microprocessor-based medication dispenser provides for recording a variety of clinical information data; such as illness symptoms, side effects, general health ratings, adverse drug interactions, illness attitudes, and lifestyle habits at various times during a drug delivery cycle. The date and time of entry of the specific clinical information is entered, and correlated with the date and time when the patient has taken or missed a particular medication. The effects of the presumptive blood levels of one or more medications can then be assessed, as to their impact on the disease process, and any additional effects on the body. The device can analyze the data and display a response to it, or download the data into another device. The second device can analyze the data, and upload new information into the first device, to tell the patient to alter his or her behavior in taking medication. In this fashion, better disease management will occur.

Method of and apparatus for monitoring the management of disease

If a designated compartment is not opened and closed within a predetermined period of time, the electrical signaling system will sound an alarm. If each designated compartment is opened and closed, the take-medication signal and the alarm (if operating) are turned off and the event is recorded for later review. The device includes a display having a substantially continuous display area having portions thereof closely adjacent to each compartment.

Electronic medication dispensing method

A container for medication has four compartments, each of which may store medication. An electrical signaling system emits take-medication signals from time to time, each of which said signals indicates (a) that medication should be taken, (b) from which compartment the medication should be taken, (c) the quantity of medication to be taken from the designated compartment, and instructions for taking the medication. If a designated compartment is not promptly opened and closed, the electrical signaling system will sound an alarm. If each designated compartment is opened and closed, the take-medication signal and the alarm (if operating) are turned off. A 'night' switch is associated with each compartment and when manually operated turns off the signaling system for such compartment; however, the signaling system is automatically reactivated the next morning. A reload signal is given once a week, as a reminder to reload the compartments with medication.

Apparatus for alerting a patient to take medication

A device for indicating when medication should be taken has plural compartments, each of which may store medication. An electrical signaling system emits take-medication signals from time to time, each of which said signals indicates (a) that medication should be taken, (b) from which compartment the medication should be taken, (c) the quantity of medication to be taken from the designated compartment, and instructions for taking the medication. If a designated compartment is not promptly opened and closed, the electrical signaling system will sound an alarm. If each designated compartment is opened and closed, the take-medication signal and the alarm (if operating) are turned off. A reload signal is given once a week, as a reminder to reload the compartments with medication. The device has modular construction. A first module has: (a) one of the compartments, (b) an alarm for producing an audible signal to alert the patient to take medication, (c) a timing signal generator for producing timing signals, (d) a circuit for energizing the alarm in response to selected timing signals, and (e) a switch for turning off said alarm when the medication has been taken from the container in the first module. Each remaining module is a plug-in device which has a compartment, receives timing signals from the first module, sends signals to activate said alarm in response to selected timing signals and a manual switch for deactivating said alarm when medication is taken from the compartment in the module.
