A bird spike is insertion molded, using a technique in which a wire that forms at least one of the spikes is bent while coupled to one of the mold parts, and a molten plastic is injected about at least a bent portion of the bent first wire. The wire can be bent before the mold closes but after attachment to the mold, while the mold is closing, and/or after the mold is closed. The wire can be bent in any suitable manner, preferably having first and second bends of at least 60°, and a bump of at least 1 mm between the first and second bends. A robot arm can be used to concurrently secure multiple straight wires from a wire holder platform, and positioned them onto the mold part.

The present invention provides deterrent devices for birds and other animals. The device includes a plurality of wires/spikes insertion molded into an elongated plastic base. Each of the wires extends out left and right sides of the base, with alternating angles between 50 and 90°. A bird deterrent has a base and at least one branched spike extending from the base. The branching can occur anywhere along the spike, and a single branch point can give rise to multiple branches. Spikes can have multiple branches. The various branches can be of any suitable length(s), and can be oriented in any suitable direction(s).

An animal deterrent device includes an elongated carrier having an internal cavity. A conductive trace can be coupled to the carrier by a first fastener that extends from the conductive trace to the cavity, which prevents water from contacting the fastener and shorting the conductive trace.
