A wireless sensor preferably has a case which is intrinsically safe and has no exposed parts which can become not intrinsically safe due to the passage of time or through contact with chemicals typically encountered in a location where the wireless sensor is used. It preferably has no integral visual display other than lights, and it preferably includes at least one signal light. The sensor preferably includes a wireless transceiver for allowing remote read and remote control of the sensor. The sensor preferably includes piezoelectric pressure detectors for allowing a user to locally interact with the sensor by pressing on the case. Data can be automatically harvested from the sensors by a portable electronic data-retrieving device which is usually geographically remote from the sensors when the portable electronic data-retrieving device and the sensors are in range of a wireless system which allows them to communicate when they are geographically proximate each other.

In one implementation, a method for implementing gain control enhancement for modulated communications includes establishing a communication session between a first endpoint and a second endpoint. The communication session involves forwarding a call signal using an initial gain level until a state transition is detected in the communication session at a digital signal processor. The detection may occur in a transmitting gateway associated with the first endpoint or a receiving gateway associated with the second endpoint. The state transition indicates modulated communications, which may include fax, modem, or text telephony. For example, communication session may be fax over IP (FoIP). The call signal is forwarded using an adjusted gain level based on the state transition. The adjusted gain level may be selected to avoid clipping in the call signal.

Gain control enhancement for modulated communications

In one embodiment, an originating gateway receives a call menu (CM) signal from an originating fax machine. The CM signal may have been generated in response to an ANSam signal from a terminating fax machine. The originating gateway suppresses the CM signal after a preamble of the CM signal and generates a modified JM signal in response to receiving the CM signal. The modified JM signal indicates that V.34 half-duplex modulation is not an option. The originating gateway transmits the modified JM signal to the originating fax machine, which allows the transmission to continue across an unenhanced T.38 fax relay.

In one embodiment, a method for discriminating between a machine generated multi-tone signal and a simulated voice multi-tone signal is provided. The method may comprise comparing output profiles generated from sampled outputs of a plurality of filters. The plurality of filters may have a single input sample stream applied to them and each filter may be preset at a measured multi-tone frequency associated with an identified prospective multi-tone signal. Based on the comparison of the output profiles, an inequality degree between the output profiles is generated and compared to an inequality threshold, thereby to determine whether the input sample stream comprises a machine generated multi-tone signal.

An improved method and system for connecting Super Group 3 fax machines over network gateways that operate using the un-enhanced T.38 protocol. With the present invention, the CM tone is suppressed. Thus a gateway that generates an AnsAm tone, will not receive a CM tone in response. The T.38 protocol does not specify what occurs if a CM tone is not received; however, it has been found that, in practice, existing fax machines fall back to V.21 mode if a CM tone is not received.

Technique for connecting fax machines with advanced capabilities over a network which is not adapted to handle certain protocols

A method for assuring that samples are always available for transmission when a modern is implemented as a process executing in the memory of a host computer. The modem process converts, digital information into transmit data samples. In the absence of digital information, the modem process converts fill data into fill data samples. The transmit data samples and fill data samples are stored in a segmented buffer for transmission to a remote modem. If additional transmit data samples become available and the buffer contains fill data samples which have not been transmitted to the remote modem, the modem process replaces the fill data samples in the buffer with the additional transmit data samples. The method helps assure that samples are always available for transmission, and simultaneously reduces the time delay or latency between when data enter the modem and when the data are subsequently transmitted.

Reducing modem transmit latency

A service chip for use with a computer. The chip includes a CPU interface, a transceiver interface, an adaptive echo cancellation filter, a monitor, and first and second data synthesizers. The CPU interface receives a transmit sample sequence from a modem sample generator executing on a central processor of the computer, and presents a receive sample sequence to a modem sample receiver executing on the central processor. The transceiver interface presents data to a line interface, which includes digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters for converting samples to/from analog signals for transmission on a telephone line. The filter adapts in response to an echo correlation between data transmitted over a transmit channel of the modem and data received on a receive channel of the transceiver interface. The monitor monitors the transmit sample sequence for a data starvation condition. The first synthesizer synthesizes a transmit sample sequence for delivery to the digital-to-analog converter over the transceiver interface when the monitor detects the data starvation condition, the synthesized transmit sample sequence being essentially free of timing information. The second synthesizer synthesizes a received data sequence for delivery on a modem receive channel to the central processing unit through the CPU interface when the monitor detects the data starvation condition, the synthesized received data sequence imperfectly approximating an echo of the transmit data channel, synthesis of the received data sequence being based on the adapted parameters of the echo cancellation filter.
