A method for jamming a target includes aiming a pulsed laser at the target using a tracking system. The pulsed laser emits a pulsed laser beam at the target, thereby generating plasma that causes sound waves equal to or less than 5 ft from the target. The pulsed laser beam is swept with a frequency range to find a target frequency, thereby jamming the target.

A laser-induced plasma (LIP) sound generator comprising: a laser beam and a first beam splitter configured to split the laser into a plurality of sub-laser beams such that each sub-laser beam creates a LIP at a respective focal point, wherein each focal point lies within an imaginary sphere having a radius that is less than half of a desired sound wavelength such that acoustic fields of the LIPs add together as if from a single point source.

A system for electromagnetic communication with a vortex beam concurrently conveys multiple topological charges of orbital angular momentum. The system includes a source, at least one vortex-sensing diffraction grating, and an array of photodetectors. The source generates the vortex beam concurrently conveying a respective number of selected topological charges during each of the time intervals. The selected topological charges for each time interval are selected from a set of available topological charges. The selected topological charges for each time interval encode a symbol of data. The vortex-sensing diffraction grating combines a vortex phase pattern and a linear phase pattern. The vortex sensing diffraction grating produces a diffraction pattern from diffracting the vortex beam received from the source. The array of photodetectors detects portions of the diffraction pattern and from the detected portions recovers the selected topological charges encoding the symbol of each time interval.

A system and method generates confined electromagnetic radiation emanating from a remote position along a line of sight. The system includes a laser arrangement and a wavefront modifier. The laser arrangement generates at least one laser beam. The wavefront modifier produces a spatial arrangement of foci of the laser beam directed along the line of sight. The foci of the laser beam induce plasma filaments within an atmosphere at the remote position along the line of sight. The plasma filaments emit the electromagnetic radiation emanating from the remote position along the line of sight.

A method comprising the steps of propagating an infrared laser pulse in air, self-focusing the laser pulse until the laser reaches a critical power density, wherein molecules in the air ionize and simultaneously absorb a plurality of infrared photons resulting in a clamping effect on the intensity of the pulse, wherein the laser pulse defocuses and plasma is created, causing a dynamical competition between the self-focusing of the laser pulse and the defocusing effect due to the created plasma, the laser pulse maintaining a small beam diameter and high peak intensity over large distances, creating a plasma column, repeating the above steps to create a plurality of plasma columns, creating a parallel linear array with the plurality of plasma columns, and using the array to deflect an incident energy.

Method and apparatus for laser-induced plasma filaments for agile counter-directed energy weapon applications

A method for spatial and intensity control of remote foci locations of an optical beam generated from a light source. First and second, axially-aligned, non-diffractive foci are created by passing the optical beam through a phase mask and a Fourier lens.
