A safety ski binding which includes a cable interconnecting a ski boot or plate attached to a ski boot with the ski. A restoring spring is provided which forces the cable toward a position holding the ski boot in an in-use skiing position on the ski, while permitting relative movement of the boot and ski and consequent extension of the cable. To prevent serious injuries in the case of full extension of the cable, the cable is disconnected, thereby fully separating the ski and boot. In preferred embodiments, a ski brake is provided to brake the separated ski.

A safety ski binding with forward and/or rear retaining mechanisms which releasably retain the ski boot is rotatably supported on the ski, against a lifting off from the ski and against lateral deflections; for purposes of rotatable support of the ski boot about an axis perpendicular to the ski, a retaining member is rotatably supported on the ski about this axis, which holds the ski boot by means of lateral extension against a lateral displacement in the ski transverse direction; the extensions couple with each other the retaining member and the ski boot in the direction of rotation, yet permit a lifting off of the ski boot from the ski in a direction perpendicular to the ski surface.

A heel hold-down mechanism for safety ski bindings with a heel hold-down member carrying a spur and adapted to be pivoted up against the elastic detent effect by means of a movable detent member; the spur is thereby pivotally mounted at the heel hold-down member and is provided with a control surface cooperating with the detent member and extending transversely to the direction of movement of the detent member; the control surface is so arranged and constructed that the spur in the normal use position of the heel hold-down member is forced by the spring-loaded detent member in a holding-down sense against the heel hold-down member and after the heel hold-down member exceeds a predetermined upward stroke is so stressed by the detent member that it is pivoted underneath the heel.

A safety ski binding with a sole plate to be clamped to the boot, which is fixed at the ski in several cross planes perpendicular to the ski surface and which is so latched that it is released against the latching action when relatively strong forces act on the binding in the sense of a binding release; the sole plate is thereby fastened at the ski in a center or rearward cross plane by lateral detent means on both sides of the ski in such a manner that for the purpose of unlatching in case of a twisting fall, it rotates about a point disposed in or approximately in this cross plane and/or is able to release in the upward direction during a forward fall; additionally, the sole plate is fastened in a second forward cross plane by the use of means, which hold the sole plate to the ski, yet permit a lateral deflection in this plane.

Ski binding apparatus which has a sole support pivotal about a pivot axis extending substantially perpendicular to the ski surface and secured against axial lifting off from the ski, in which the sole support is axially secured by readily detachable securing means. In preferred embodiments the readily detachable securing means are in the form of two-part snap action connection means which automatically connect and disconnect the sole support in response to forces on the two parts in the direction of the pivot axis. In other preferred embodiments, the securing means include spring detents engageable with aperture means in a pivot pin for the sole support.

A safety ski binding with a release mechanism that normally retains the ski boot against a resistance; when exceeding this resistance, the release mechanism permits a rotation of the boot about an axis of rotation forwardly by an amount sufficient for the release of the boot; the axis of rotation is a cross-axis arranged between the toe and heel area as well as between the running surface of the ski and the knee joint and the rotary movement of the boot starts with a predetermined torque in relation to this cross axis which corresponds to a bending moment that is just barely still tolerable by the lower part of the leg.

A retaining mechanism for ski bindings with a curved retaining member, retaining tightener or the like serving for the retention of the boot, which is adapted to be inserted into lateral cross bores of a sole plate or a similar part arranged on the ski by means of inwardly directed pin portions; the cross bores are provided both with an internal thread for receiving pin portions provided with corresponding external threads and with bayonet-like grooves for pin portions provided with elements to be coupled with the grooves in a bayonet-like manner.

An adjustable retaining jaw for ski bindings, especially a front jaw, for the support of a binding part pivotal about a horizontal axis and/or about an axis perpendicular to the ski surface, which includes a detent member subjected to spring pressure and engageable in a counter-detent member; the detent member is thereby adjustably arranged as a unit together with the detent spring keeping the same under spring pressure.
