The invention includes isolated nucleic acid molecules encoding a Rhesus ob gene product that regulates obesity in mammals. A preferred embodiment consisting of a native DNA sequence is disclosed, as are vectors and methods for expressing the Rhesus ob gene product.

The present invention is composed of novel recombinant DNA expression vectors which contain a transcriptional activating sequence, a translational activating sequence and a DNA sequence coding for a functional polypeptide, especially bovine growth hormone. The aforementioned translational activating sequences contain a ribosome binding site and are designed to provide high level expression of DNA that codes for virtually any functional polypeptide.
