The present invention relates to a member of a novel gene family referred to as developmentally-regulated endothelial cell locus-1 (del-1). In particularly, the invention related to del-1 nucleotide sequences, Del-1 amino acid sequences, methods of expressing a functional gene product, and methods of using the gene and gene product. Since del-1 is expressed in endothelial cells and certain cancer cells, it may be useful as an endothelial cell and tumor marker. In addition, anti-Del-1 antibodies for immunological assessment of Del-1 protein expression as well as for inhibiting or stimulating Del-1 function are provided.

Purified BMP-15-related proteins and processes for producing them are disclosed. DNA molecules encoding the BMP-15-related proteins are also disclosed. The proteins may be used in the treatment of bone and cartilage and/or other connective tissue defects and in wound healing and related tissue repair.

The claimed invention is directed towards non-murine pluripotential cells that have the ability to be passaged in vitro for at least 20 passages and which differentiate in culture into a variety of tissues. The scope of the claimed cells includes any non-murine ES cells and particular claims are drawn to human pluripotential cells.

Pluripotential embryonic cells and methods of making same

The present invention provides a non-mouse pluripotential embryonic stem cell which can be maintained on feeder layers for at least 20 passages and give rise to embryoid bodies and multiple differentiated cell phenotypes in monolayer culture. The invention further provides a method of making a pluripotential embryonic stem cell comprising administering a growth enhancing amount of basic fibroblast growth factor, leukemia inhibitory factor, membrane associated steel factor, and soluble steel factor to primordial germ cells under cell growth conditions, thereby making a pluripotential embryonic stem cell.
