In one embodiment, the system may identify a virtual network, the virtual network including a plurality of virtual entities and connections among the plurality of virtual entities. The system may automatically map each of the plurality of virtual entities to one or more resources or resource pools such that the virtual network is mapped to a physical network, wherein mapping includes allocating one or more resources or resource pools to a corresponding one of the plurality of virtual entities.

A method is provided in one example embodiment and includes instantiating a virtual adapter on a network device connected to a storage array, the virtual adapter capable of communicating with the storage array; determining storage configuration properties for the network device; and provisioning a portion of the storage array to the network device in accordance with the determined storage configuration properties. The method may further comprise associating the network device with a service profile, where the storage configuration properties are specified in the service profile. Still further, the method may comprise configuring the network device in accordance with the associated service profile, where the instantiating is also performed in accordance with the associated service profile.

In one embodiment, an apparatus obtains a switch port identifier mapping for each of the plurality of ports of a network device, wherein the switch port identifier mapping indicates a port identifier of one of the plurality of ports of the network device and a switch port identifier of a switch port to which the one of the plurality of ports is connected. The apparatus obtains a set of switch information for each of a plurality of switches, the set of switch information including a set of switch port identifiers associated with the corresponding one of the plurality of switches. Automated discovery/rediscovery of server to network connectivity

A method and apparatus for transferring data between IP devices (including, but not limited to, Gigabit Ethernet devices) and SCSI or Fibre Channel devices. The device interfaces may be either SCSI, Fibre Channel or IP interfaces such as Gigabit Ethernet. Data is switched between SCSI and IP, Fibre Channel and IP, or between SCSI and Fibre Channel. Data can also be switched from SCSI to SCSI, IP to IP and FC to FC. The port interfaces provide the conversion from the input frame format to an internal frame format, which can be routed within the apparatus. The amount of processing performed by each port interface is dependent on the interface type. The processing capabilities of the present invention permit rapid transfer of information packets between multiple interfaces at latency levels meeting the stringent requirements for storage protocols. The configuration control can be applied to each port on a switch and, in turn, each switch on the network, via an SNMP or Web-based interface, providing a flexible, programmable control for the apparatus.
